Xiong Highlights Opening Round of NCAA Championships
05/25/18 | Men's Golf
STILLWATER, Okla. – Norman Xiong shot a 4-under 68 and is one shot off the individual lead at the end of the suspended opening round of the NCAA Championships at Karsten Creek Golf Club. Oregon shot 8 over and is tied for 26th as half the teams will complete their first rounds Saturday morning.
How it Happened: Xiong got off to a quick start, making birdie on a pair of par 4s in his opening four holes to reach 2 under. He then birdied the par-3 seventh hole but gave a shot back with a bogey at eight. A double bogey at the difficult par-4 10th dropped him back to even par but he bounced back with four birdies in his final eight holes.
Donald Kay shot a 2-over 74 to sit in a tie for 80th and Edwin Yi shot a 3-over 75 and is tied for 99th. Yi opened with birdie at the first hole but gave a pair back with a double bogey at the par-4 second hole. He birdied the par-3 seventh but bogeyed the eighth to shoot even going out before making two bogeys and seven pars on the back nine.
Kay went out in 2-over 38, but got back to even with back-to-back birdies at 11 and 12. He dropped back to 3 over after a bogey at 14 and a double bogey at 17 but birdied the last to shoot even on the back nine.
Northwestern holds the early lead at 8 under while four players are tied for the individual lead at 5 under. The start of play was delayed for two hours due to inclement weather before another one hour delay halted play in the morning.
Quotable: Sophomore Norman Xiong
On his mindset...
"I think I have done a really good job of learning how to go in there and get in my zone. Just try and stay in the present. Before, I would have a lot of distractions, but now I'm better at staying in the moment."
