Behind a 3 under performance from Petra Salko, the Oregon women’s golf team shot a 2-over 289 in the second round of the San Francisco NCAA Regional to remain tied for fourth place
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Oregon women's golf team enjoyed another terrific day at TCP Harding Park on Tuesday in the second round of the San Francisco NCAA Regional, shooting a 2-over 289 to remain tied for fourth place with one round remaining.
How it Happened: The Ducks got off to a stellar start on the front nine, shooting 5 under as a team and moving up to as high as second place at one point. Oregon's terrific start allowed for some leeway on a difficult back nine and helped the Ducks stay tied for fourth place and in solid position entering the third and final round. Ole Miss is currently even with UO at 1 over, while Kent State and Stanford lead the field at 2 under. The top six teams after tomorrow's final round will advance to the NCAA Championships (May 18-23) in Stillwater, Okla.
Junior Petra Salko came alive in the second round of the Regional, carding five birdies to finish with a 3-under 69. Her solid performance allowed her to jump up 30 spots on the individual leaderboard into a tie for 12th and put her at 1 under for the tournament. Salko's second round 69 marks her sixth round of the season at par or better and is one stroke off her career-low round.
Kathleen Scavo continues to be an integral part of the Ducks' lineup. The junior finished under par for the second day in a row, shooting a 1-under 71. Scavo remains in the top five on the individual leaderboard as she enters tomorrow's final round tied for fourth at 3 under overall, just two strokes behind Hira Naveed of Pepperdine, who leads at 5 under.
Sophomore Amy Matsuoka got off to a strong start in second round of the Regional, going 1 under with a birdie and 11 pars through the first 12 holes. A pair of bogeys on her last two holes put her at 2 over for the day, but she remains in the top 25 overall after two solid rounds at 1 over.
Freshman Madi Daniel seemed to settle into the course today, carding two birdies to round out the counting scores with a 4-over 76 performance.
After dropping in three birdies on an even-par front nine, freshman Alexis Phadungmartvorakul had trouble on the back nine, finishing at 5 over.
Quotable:
Ria Scott, Head Coach
"Petra played an awesome round today. She is so in control of her emotions, and her golf game. We love seeing her confident. Scavo and Madi had strong finishes and that was really important for our team. They know what they need to do tomorrow and are more motivated than ever."
Petra Salko, Junior
"I was really solid today on the course and really enjoyed myself … Seeing my teammates hit great shots definitely hyped me up and helped me to keep my momentum going. We have one more day tomorrow and we are just going to keep doing our own thing because we know we have everything it takes to make it to Nationals."
What it Means: The Ducks continued to play consistently in the second round, which puts them in good position heading into the final round tomorrow. However, the separation between them and the seventh place team is four strokes, meaning they need to continue to go low in order to secure a third straight trip to the NCAA Championships.
