EUGENE, Ore. – Starter Cullen Kafka held Oregon State to just one run in 4.2 innings of work but the Beavers exploded for eight runs in the sixth inning off the bullpen en route to a 10-0 nonconference win on Tuesday at PK Park.
How it happened: Oregon State took the lead in the top of the fifth off Kafka. After retiring the first two hitters of the inning, Kalfa walked Steven Kwan and hit Cadyn Grenier. Nick Madrigal made Kafka pay looping a double down the right-field line to score Kwan and give OSU a 1-0 lead.
The Beavers broke the game open in the top of the sixth scoring eight runs on nine hits against three Oregon pitchers. OSU strung together six straight hits before a walk broke the streak. Three of the next four hitters added a hit before the inning ended with Oregon State leading 9-0.
The Beavers added a run in the eighth on a solo home run by Michael Gretler.
Duck notes: Kafka matched a season-high with his five strikeouts … In his last three appearances, Kafka has a 2.00 ERA with nine strikeouts in nine innings pitched … He pitched 7.1 innings with eight strikeouts while giving up just one run in two appearances against Oregon State … Jakob Goldfarb tied Austin Grebeck (2014-16) for the Oregon career record for outfield assists with his 11th … Gabe Matthews recorded his 10th multi-hit game of the season … He finished 5-for-15 (.333) with two runs scored and two RBI in five games against Oregon State … Goldfarb is now hitting .323 after going 1-for-2 with a double.
On deck: Oregon hosts Utah in a three-game Pac-12 Conference series starting Friday. Game times are 6 p.m., 2 p.m. (Saturday) and noon (Sunday).
