SAN FRANCISCO – Recent Oregon lacrosse graduate Natalie Modly and track & field's Sabrina Southerland are two of 24 recipients of Pac-12 Postgraduate Scholarships for the 2017-18 academic year, announced by the conference office on Friday.
The scholarships, worth $9,000 each, are awarded to up to two student-athletes from each Pac-12 school annually. The selected student-athletes maintained a minimum 3.0 grade-point average (GPA) and demonstrated a commitment to education, campus and community involvement, and leadership.
Modly will attend Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine to pursue her Doctorate of Dental Medicine. A Pac-12 All-Academic first team selection as a senior, Modly graduated with a degree in general science and carried a 3.90 cumulative GPA.
A native of Annapolis, Md., Modly played saved her best performance for one of her final games as a Duck. The senior co-captain scored a career-high six goals – one off the program record – to go along with seven draw controls during Oregon's 22-9 win over California in the opening round of the inaugural Pac-12 Tournament. Modly finished career with 49 goals, including 27 in 2017, and had a total of 58 points.
Southerland, who also received USTFCCCA all-academic honors, is pursuing her Master's degree in non-profit management from the University of Oregon School of Planning, Public Policy and Management. She finished the 2017-18 academic year with a 3.26 GPA.
A fifth-year transfer from Georgetown, Southerland was a huge addition on the track for the Women of Oregon during her one season with the Ducks. Southerland used a tremendous final kick to win the NCAA Indoor title in the 800 meters, and then led from wire-to-wire at the Pac-12 meet to claim the conference championship. She also scored indoors in the 4x400 relay and was seventh outdoors in the 800 to finish the year with three first-team all-American honors.
