Ducks Go 2-0 at East & West Match Play

SUNDAY STROKE PLAY
After 36 holes of stroke play on Sunday at the East and West Match Play Challenge, the Oregon women's golf team locked up the event's No. 5 seed.
The No. 5 seed Ducks will face No. 8 seed Wisconsin on Monday in the second bracket. The winner meets the winner of No. 6 seed Texas A&M and No. 7 seed and host Michigan. UC Davis, at 1-under, is the No. 1 seed in the first bracket while Oregon State is the No. 2 seed, Iowa State is No. 3 and Ohio State is No. 4.
"I'm excited to get our first day under our belts," said head coach Derek Radley. "Monica (Vaughn) did an outstanding job in her coaching debut and we're looking forward to competing in match play the next two days."
Freshman Tze-Han Lin posted a team-best 1-under to finish sixth individually. In her first collegiate round, Lin shot an even par 72 with two birdies and two bogeys. In the second round of the day, Lin went 1-under 71 with five birdies and four bogeys. She birded three of the course's four par 5 holes in her second round.
"I am very proud of Tze-Han, she was very steady," said Radley.
Senior Kathleen Scavo was Oregon's No. 2 finisher in stroke play. She shot a 1-over to place eighth individually. She was 3-over after the day's first round but shot a 2-under 70 in her second round with five birdies and three bogeys. Like Lin, she birdied three par 5 holes.
Fellow senior Petra Salko was 4-over after 32 holes while Amy Matsuoka was 9-over and Alexis Phadungmartvorakul was 20-over. Freshman Bella Setio played a non-scoring round, shooting 8-over.
MONDAY MATCH PLAY ROUND 1
The Ducks used a huge round by Petra Salko to knock off Wisconsin, 4-1, on Monday in the first of two rounds at the East & West Match Play Challenge.
Salko won 6 & 5 over Wisconsin's Gabrielle Tomeo. The senior was 3-up after playing the back nine at Radrick Farms Golf Club and then won three straight holes to clinch it through 13.
Amy Matsuoka (3 & 2), Alexis Phadungmartvorakul (3 & 2) and Kathleen Scavo (2 & 1) also won while Tze-Han Lin lost, 1-up.
Matsuoka was 1-up after the back nine, but won the first hole and the seventh hole to end it. Phadungmartvorakul was all square after the back nine, but won three of the next five holes to pull away. Scavo was down two holes after the back nine but had a dominant front nine. She won five holes on the front nine, including the eighth hole to clinch it.
After leading the Ducks in stroke play on Sunday, Lin played a back-and-forth round on Monday. Neither she or Wisconsin's Aya Johnson ever led by more than a hole. After ending the back nine all square, Lin rallied back from down a hole to tie it with a win on No. 2 and took a one-hole lead with a win on No. 3. Johnson evened it up again with a win on No. 5 and clinched it with a win on No. 7.
TUESDAY MATCH PLAY ROUND 2
After winning four of five rounds on Monday against Wisconsin, the Ducks did the same against another Big Ten foe. Oregon topped host Michigan, 4.5-0.5, on Tuesday morning to go 2-0 at the East & West Match Play Challenge.
Kathleen Scavo had a strong round, winning 6 & 4. The senior had a two-hole lead after eight but won four of the next six holes to win the round. Fellow senior Petra Salko also won her round, 2 & 1. It was all square after the back nine, but Salko won both No. 2 and No.3 to go up two and never looked back.
After falling in her round on Monday against Wisconsin, freshman Tze-Han Lin bounced back with a dominating 5 & 4 win. Starting on the back nine, Lin was all square after five holes but won four of the next six holes. She would go on to win the fifth hole to clinch it.
Amy Matsuoka also won her round, 4 & 3. Matsuoka never trailed, winning the 10th hole to open her round and slowly built on her lead.
Alexis Phadungmartvorakul finished her round all square. Michigan led by two holes three to play but Phadungmartvorakul won at No. 7 and No. 9, the final hole of the round, to even it up.
"We showed some heart these last two days," head coach Derek Radley said. "We put the hammer down and played really well. We've talked a lot about attitude and mental toughness and we're hoping to ride this momentum into the next tournament."
Oregon has three more tournaments this fall. Up next is the Schooner Classic in Norman, Okla., starting on Sept. 28.
