Oregon Women Dominate Dellinger Invite
09/21/18 | Cross Country
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The Oregon women's cross country team dominated on Friday in the annual Bill Dellinger Invitational, placing Ducks in each of the first seven spots of the women's 6,000-meter race at Springfield Golf Club.
The Men of Oregon finished second in their 8,000-meter race with 38 points, 13 behind No. 3 Portland.
How it Happened – Women: Senior Susan Ejore finished in 19:32.7 and claimed her second win in as many races to lead the Ducks to a perfect score of 15. Senior transfer Weronika Pyzik was second in her Duck debut in 19:33.0, and 2018 NCAA 1,500 meter champion Jessica Hull placed third in 19:33.3. Carmela Cardama Baez, Isabelle Brauer, Phily Bowden and Amanda Gehrich capped the 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 Oregon finish. Nevada placed second with 62 points, 47 behind the Ducks.
How it Happened – Men: Junior Jackson Mestler was the Ducks' first counting runner, finishing third in 24:55.3, but sophomore Cooper Teare placed second in 24:54.0 while running unattached for the second straight meet. Sophomore Reed Brown also ran unattached, placing seventh in 25:14.4. James West was ninth in 25:16.5 to score points for the Ducks, and Levi Thomet (25:19.5) and Blake Haney (25:24.7) were 12th and 13th, respectively. Jack Yearian rounded out the counting scores in 19th. Portland's Reuben Kiprono won the men's race in 24:39.5 to lead the Pilots to the win.
What it Means: The Women of Oregon did a great job of pack running on Friday, a focus coming into the meet, and the Men of Oregon performed better than the team results showed with Teare and Brown both running unattached. The Ducks will continue to ramp up their training over the next couple weeks before the Pre-Nationals Invitational on October 13.
Notable: Friday marked Oregon's second and final home meet of the season … Former Oregon coach Bill Dellinger was in attendance for the meet … Ejore has led a 1-2 Oregon finish in each of the Ducks' first two meets so far in 2018.
Up Next: The Ducks will get their first look at this year's NCAA Championships course at the Pre-Nationals Invitational in Madison, Wisc.
