Notes: Mountain Trip Up Next for Men's Hoops
01/28/19 | Men's Basketball
The Ducks head to the mountains to face Utah and Colorado. First up are the Utes in Salt Lake City on Thursday (6 p.m. PT, FS1).
THE STARTING 5
• 1 – The Ducks nearly achieved an interesting mark Sunday against Washington State. Louis King scored 22 points, Kenny Wooten had 20 and Paul White added 18. If White would have scored two more points, the Ducks would have had three players with 20+ points for the first time in 17 years. Oregon last had three players with 20 or more points in the 2002 NCAA Tournament versus Wake Forest when Luke Jackson scored 29, Luke Ridnour had 28 and Fred Jones netted 24.
• 2 – Not only did Payton Pritchard become the sixth member of Oregon's 1,000-points, 400-assists club Sunday versus Washington State, but he also tied the Matthew Knight Arena record with a career-high six steals. Prichard is just the eighth Duck to record at least six steals in a game. The other members of Oregon's 1,000-points, 400-assists club are Ron Lee, Aaron Brooks, Luke Ridnour, Luke Jackson and Kenya Wilkins.
• 3 – Freshman Louis King is the Pac-12's No. 8 scorer (17.9 ppg) and No. 9 rebounder (7.0 rpg) in conference games. He's scored in double figures in all seven Pac-12 games, and opened Pac-12 play with back-to-back double-doubles against OSU and UCLA. Last week, King had 19 points against Washington before matching his career high with 22 versus WSU.
• 4 – After losing Bol Bol for the season and Kenny Wooten for four games due to injuries, Paul White stepped in to fill the void. He has reached double figures in points in seven-of-the-last-eight games, including a career high 19 points Jan. 13 versus USC, and 18 Sunday against Washington State.
• 5 – Payton Pritchard leads the Pac-12 and is eighth nationally in free throw percentage (.915).
WOOTEN MOVES INTO TOP THREE IN UO CAREER BLOCKS
With three blocks Sunday versus Washington State, Kenny Wooten tied Blair Rasmussen (1981-85) for third on the UO career blocks list with 116. Wooten also matched a career high with 20 points against the Cougars. Prior to breaking his jaw at Baylor, which caused him to miss the next four games, Wooten set a career-high 20 points Dec. 8 versus Nebraska-Omaha. Wooten's 92 blocks as a freshman ranked third on both the UO single-season list, and the Pac-12 freshman list.
NEW BACKCOURT DUO
Will Richardson moved back into the starting lineup Sunday against Washington State, and the freshman and Payton Pritchard combined for 14 assists and no turnovers. In the six games this year those two have started together in the backcourt, they have combined for 49 assists and 18 turnovers, for an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.7-to-1, an average that would rank second in the Pac-12.
SECOND HALF LEADS
In spite of their 3-4 Pac-12 record, the Ducks have led in the second half of all seven Pac-12 games. What's been frustrating is that Oregon had led with less than two minutes to play in three of those four losses.
CLOSE CALLS
Six of Oregon's eight losses on the season have come by less than 10 points. Last year, the Ducks lost eight games by single digits. Those numbers harken back to the 2005-06 season when that sophomore-laden squad dropped an excruciating 13 games by single digits. That team did make a run to the 2006 Pac-10 Tournament semifinals and the following year, the same group of players won the Pac-10 Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Elite 8.
CONSISTENT COACHING STAFF
Success on the court often goes hand-in-hand with continuity off the court. During the nine-year Dana Altman era, Oregon has seen just one change on its coaching staff. That came following the 2013-14 season, when assistant coach Brian Fish accepted the head coaching job at Montana State, and was replaced by current assistant Michael Mennenga. Oregon's two other assistants, Kevin McKenna and Tony Stubblefield, have been with Altman at Oregon since day one. The Ducks' continuity extends even beyond the assistant coaches with director of operations Josh Jamieson in his 15th year and athletic trainer Clay Jamieson in his 21st season in Eugene.
500th BOARD MEANS EXCLUSIVE CLUB FOR AMIN
Reaching the 500-rebound plateau Jan. 17 at Arizona, Ehab Amin is now one of only two active college players with 1,000 career points, 500 career rebounds, 200 career assists and 200 career steals. The other is Purdue-Fort Wayne's John Konchar. Amin, who led the NCAA in steals as a junior at Texas A&M Corpus Christi in 2016-17, is third in the Pac-12 at 1.7 steals per game. Amin has shown a burst of offense at times as well. He scored 25 points Nov. 15 against Iowa and had 23 points. Dec. 29 at Boise State.
PRITCHARD REACHES 1,000 CAREER POINTS, 400 CAREER ASSISTS
Jan. 17 at Arizona, Payton Pritchard became the 37th 1,000-point scorer in program history. Jan. 24 versus Washington he passed Glen Moore (1,033/1959-63) for 34th on the UO career scoring list. Pritchard enters the Utah game with 1,040 points. Former teammate Tyler Dorsey (2015-17) is 33rd with 1,055 points. With a season-best eight assists Jan. 27 against Washington State, Pritchard became just the sixth player in program history with 1,000 career points and 400 career assists. Pritchard moved past former NBA Slam Dunk champion Fred Jones (367/1998-02) for seventh on the UO career assists list Dec. 29 at Boise State and now shows 405 career assists. Luke Jackson (2000-04) is sixth with 424 assists. Pritchard is also climbing the UO career steals list. Sunday against Washington State, he jumped into eighth with 130, passing Aaron Brooks (127/2003-07).
PRITCHARD AMONG NCAA FREE THROW LEADERS
Payton Pritchard leads the Pac-12 and ranks eighth nationally in free throw percentage at 91.5 percent. Pritchard has made 54-of-59 attempts from the line this season.
WHITE FILLS IN ON FRONT LINE
With Bol Bol out for the season and Kenny Wooten missing four games due to injuries, Paul White stepped us his effort. He has scored in double figures in seven-of-the-last-eight games, including back-to-back-to-back season highs of 15 points versus Oregon State (Jan. 5), 16 points against UCLA (Jan. 10) and 19 points versus USC (Jan. 13). He scored a team-high 16 points in the Ducks' Jan. 17 59-54 win at Arizona and added 18 points Sunday versus Washington State.
KING LOUIE BREAKS OUT
Freshman Louis King opened Pac-12 play with back-to-back double-doubles and has scored in double figures in all seven league contests. He had 17 points and 10 rebounds Jan. 5 against Oregon State, and followed that with 22 points and 10 rebounds Jan. 10 versus UCLA. Jan. 13 against USC, King had 19 points and a season-best six assists. He just missed his third double-double of the season Feb. 17 at Arizona when he had 10 points and nine rebounds. He led Oregon with 19 points Jan. 24 against Washington before matching his career high with 22 points Sunday versus Washington State. In conference games, King is the Pac-12's No. 8 scorer (17.9 points per game) and No. 9 rebounder (7.0 rebounds per game). King made his Oregon debut Dec. 8 against Omaha and made efficient use of his minutes. He scored 11 points on four-of-six shooting from the field (three-of-four 3FG) in 16 minutes. He missed the first seven games of the season recovering from a knee injury he suffered in high school.
RICHARDSON RISES
Freshman Will Richardson set a season high in scoring in four consecutive non-conference games. He had seven points against Syracuse, 10 against Green Bay, 13 versus Texas Southern and 16 at Houston. More recently, he had 11 points and a season-high six assists Jan. 10 versus UCLA. On the year, Richardson is dishing out 2.4 assists per game.
FRESHMEN BIGS CONTRIBUTE
Freshmen Miles Norris and Francis Okoro have made the most of increased minutes in the past few weeks. After scoring six points Jan. 19 at Arizona State, Norris scored a season-best 10 points last week against Washington. Okoro made all four field goal attempts against the Huskies and finished with eight points an six rebounds.
STARTING ROTATION
Dec. 29 at Boise State, Francis Okoro became the 10th different Duck to start a game this season. That's a single-season high during the Dana Altman era, and the most for the Ducks since 2009-10, when 11 different Ducks made at least one start.
YOUNG FRESH FELLOWS
Of Oregon's 12-player roster, 75 percent (9) are either freshmen or sophomores. Duck freshmen have logged 1,450 minutes so far this season (72.5 minutes per game). The three veteran outliers are junior Payton Pritchard, senior Paul White and senior grad transfer Ehab Amin.
