Oregon Wins Top-15 Battle With Memphis
11/12/19 | Men's Basketball
The No. 14 Oregon men's basketball team led most of the night to beat No. 13 Memphis on Tuesday in Portland.
PORTLAND — Shakur Juiston had a double-double to lead four Ducks in double figures Tuesday as the Oregon men's basketball team won a matchup of top-15 teams in the Phil Knight Invitational, beating Memphis 82-74 at Moda Center.
No. 14 Oregon trailed for just 1:47 of the game, but the No. 13 Tigers surged several times to make the UO lead precarious, thanks in part to 18 turnovers and 15-of-27 free-throw shooting by the Ducks. The Tigers were within four at 71-67 with 4:01 to go, but three-pointers by Will Richardson and Payton Pritchard provided the Ducks some cushion.
"We never really hung our heads," Richardson said. "We kept our heads in it, kept fighting, because we knew it was things we could fix. We just kept our head up."

How It Happened: Memphis fielded a lineup laden with members of the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation, a five-freshman group led by post James Wiseman. His size had a big impact on the early minutes, as Oregon settled for three-pointers and fell behind 7-5.
But Wiseman picked up his second foul less than 5 minutes into the game, and the tenor changed. The Ducks immediately got to the rim for baskets by Juiston and Pritchard, softening up the perimeter for a three-pointer by Richardson that capped a 7-0 run. Juiston scored on back-to-back possessions for an 18-11 lead, and then Chris Duarte did likewise to make it 23-11.
Oregon led 30-22 when the momentum shifted. Memphis began pressing on defense, and the Ducks hit a lull after Duarte left with a knee injury. The Tigers forced turnovers on four straight UO possessions, and used a 9-0 run to lead 31-30. But the Ducks stabilized themselves with an 8-0 run fueled by two Anthony Mathis three-pointers, and led 41-35 at halftime.

Juiston finished an alley-oop from Pritchard early in the second half, and the lead remained six at 48-42. The Tigers answered with seven straight points to led briefly, 49-48, but Juiston regained the lead for Oregon, sparking a 9-0 run capped by a three-point play by UO freshman Chandler Lawson, a Memphis native. Freshman Addison Patterson's energy on both ends was key to that run, as he attacked the basket for four points and contributed a steal at the other end.
Oregon led 65-53 when Memphis surged again, scored eight straight to get within four. Francis Okoro, who returned to the UO lineup after missing one game due to injury, ended the run with a putback and the Ducks led the rest of the way, despite Memphis closing within four a couple of times down the stretch.
"We knew it would be a tough game," Richardson said. "But we're just going with the same attitude every game. Do the tough things — defend, rebound."

Who Stood Out: Juiston scored his 17 points on 8-of-15 shooting, and added 10 rebounds — four on the offensive end. Pritchard added 14 points with six assists, and Mathis followed up his nine three-pointers in Saturday's game with four Tuesday. Richardson matched Pritchard's six assists and added 10 points.
What It Means: The Ducks improved to 3-0 with their most impressive win on the résumé to this point, one that could loom large when NCAA Tournament seedings are being decided come March.
Notable: Duarte had to be helped from the floor after banging knees with an opponent in the first half. He warmed up for the second half with a sleeve on his right knee and was replaced early in the frame by Richardson. … Juiston, a graduate transfer from UNLV, recorded the 19th double-double of his career, and his first with Oregon with season highs in points and rebounds. Pritchard had a pair of three-pointers to pass Luke Ridnour for sixth in UO career triples with 204. ... Chris Boucher of the Toronto Raptors visited the Ducks' locker room following the win.
Up Next: The Ducks return to Matthew Knight Arena for a game against Texas-Arlington on Sunday (5 p.m., Pac-12).
