Ducks Fall Just Short Against Another Top-10 Foe
11/29/19 | Men's Basketball
PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas – No. 11 Oregon dropped its second consecutive nail-biter to a top-10 team to close out the Battle 4 Atlantis Friday at the Imperial Arena.
Oregon pulled within one of No. 6 North Carolina, 72-71, with :32 remaining, but the Tar Heels made their free throws and held on for the 78-74 win in the consolation final.
North Carolina was the fourth Top 25 opponent the Ducks have faced in eight games this season. It is the first time in program history that the Ducks have played four ranked teams in the nonconference portion of the schedule.
How it Happened: North Carolina went up by 10, 70-60 with 5:12 left in the game, but Oregon went on a 9-0 run to close within 70-69 with 1:29 remaining. Payton Pritchard had five of his team-high 19 points in that run, while Will Richardson added a three-pointer.
Cole Anthony's basket gave the Tar Heels a 72-69 lead before C.J. Walker answered with a put-back bucket with :32 to play. On UNC's possession, the Ducks intentionally fouled Anthony, who made both free throws for a 74-71 lead. Pritchard's potential game-tying three-pointer with :09 remaining was off the mark and the Tar Heels made four consecutive free throws, part of a 20-of-21 effort at the line, to seal the win.
The Tar Heels led by as many as nine in the first half before Oregon closed it to 46-41 at intermission. Richardson scored 12 points in the frame for the Ducks, while Pritchard added 11 and Chris Duarte had seven points and five rebounds.
Who Stood Out: Richardson scored a season-high 17 points, one off his career high. Duarte matched his career high with 16 points. Walker continued his strong tournament with six points and six rebounds.
Notable: Pritchard entered the UO career top-15 in scoring. He passed Bryce Taylor (1,435/2004-08) on Friday and finished the game with 1,452 points. … Friday's game was a rematch of the 2017 NCAA Final Four, when North Carolina edged Oregon 77-76 in a national semifinal before going on to win that year's NCAA title. … The Tar Heels are also the sixth straight Oregon foe picked to finish first or second in their respective conference's preseason poll. … The combined point difference of Oregon's three games in the Battle 4 Atlantis – all of which were against Top-15 opponents – was three points (217-220).
Quotable:
Head coach Dana Altman:
"I liked our effort. I thought we played as hard as we could, but we have to be more physical on boards. We took it weak to the basket a few times. We've got to really take it strong so, we just didn't finish it on plays. It really hurts when you lose a couple games to couple good teams and you really don't do the things that are under your control."
Up Next: Oregon returns home to host Hawaii on Dec. 7 (4 p.m., Pac-12 Network).
