EUGENE, Ore. – In her first race in an Oregon kit since June, redshirt senior Carmela Cardama Baez ran 15:25.41 at the BU Season Opener to break the indoor school record over 5,000 meters. She finished in fifth place among collegiate entries and sixth overall.

Cardama Baez took nearly 15 seconds off the Oregon record, and just under 30 seconds off her previous best of 15:55.00 from the 2018 MPSF Championships. She surpasses Jordan Hasay (15:40.30, 2013) for the top spot on the UO indoor list and replaces her own previous absolute 5K best of 15:38.77 from last year's Payton Jordan Invitational.

Last year's BU Season Opener produced 10 of the 16—and the top nine—NCAA-qualifying times at 5,000 meters. Including Cardama Baez, seven women finished under 15:30 in Saturday's race.

Cardama Baez last competed for the Ducks at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships where she ran to a runner-up finish at 10,000 meters, the highest 10K finish by an Oregon woman since Kathy Hayes won the event in 1984.

What's Next: The Ducks' indoor campaign resumes Jan. 18 with the UW Indoor Preview in Seattle. It will mark the first of three meets in Seattle for Oregon this season with additional trips for the Husky Classic (Feb. 14-15) and MPSF Championships (Feb. 28-29).
