Gritty Ducks Fall to Illinois, 4-3

The Ducks forced four singles matches into third sets, but came up short, losing 4-3 to Illinois on Sunday.
URBANA, Ill. – The Ducks battled until the end, but came up just short, falling 4-3 to Illinois on Sunday at the Atkins Tennis Center.
How It Happened: Oregon (4-3) began the morning by claiming the doubles point after hard-fought wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots.
After losing at the No. 3 spot and claiming a narrow 7-5 victory at the No. 2 spot, the doubles point came down to Shweta Sangwan and Rifanty Kahfiani. The duo claimed a narrow 7-6(6) win, securing the first point of the match for the Ducks.
Despite taking a 1-0 lead heading into singles play, Oregon was forced to play the remainder of duel shorthanded after forfeiting a match due to injury.
Illinois (2-3) claimed its second point of the match after a straight-set win at the No. 5 spot. However, the Ducks displayed resiliency, forcing the remaining four singles matches into third sets.
Kahfiani won the first set at the No. 2 spot, but ultimately couldn't hold on, falling 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. A couple courts over, the story was similar for Alison Mulville who dropped her match, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 – a clinching win for Illinois.
Although Illinois had claimed the victory, Daniela Nasser and Paiton Wagner continued to fight in their matches.
Nasser completed the comeback at the top spot, taking control in the final two sets to claim a 6-7 (9), 6-1, 6-4 victory. Wagner was close behind her, winning two tiebreaks to give the Ducks their third point of the match, 3-6, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (2).
