Ducks Fall at No. 8 Texas Tech, 12-11
02/16/19 | Baseball
Oregon scored eight runs in the top of the first inning, but Tech would answer quickly with three runs in the first and four runs in the second while drawing 10 walks in the game, four of which would result in runs.
How it Happened: With Oregon leading 11-9, the Red Raiders loaded the bases in the seventh, and Ducks left-handed reliever Kolby Somers issued consecutive bases-loaded walks to tie the score at 11. Right-handed pitcher Christian Ciuffetelli entered, and after an RBI groundout from Dru Baker gave Tech a 12-11 lead, struck out Brian Klein swinging with the bases loaded to end the threat.
After Tanner Smith was hit by a pitch with one out in the ninth, Texas Tech freshman reliever Clayton Beeter entered the game, striking out Sam Novitske and Jonny DeLuca to end the game.
Oregon started the game by scoring eight runs while batting around in the first inning with the first four Duck hitters reaching base, three of whom would score on subsequent bases-loaded walks, and another who would score when Max Foxcroft was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Smith then hit a ground ball back to pitcher Erikson Lanning, who made an errant throw to the plate allowing two Ducks to score. Smith was then caught in a rundown between first and second that would allow Foxcroft to score, with Smith eluding the tag from Texas Tech first baseman Cameron Warren and ending up safe at second.
Smith would score on an RBI single by DeLuca two hitters later, giving Oregon an 8-0 lead. The Red Raiders answered with three runs in the bottom of the first against Oregon starter Ryne Nelson, when the first four TTU hitters reached base, including an RBI single from All-American third baseman Josh Jung. Left fielder Dylan Neuse then added a two-run single to left.
Both teams would add solo home runs to left field from their catchers in the second, including a no-doubt home run blast by Oregon's Cameron Campbell than landed far beyond the left field fence. Texas Tech's Braxton Fulford would follow suit with a solo blast of his own. The Red Raiders would then add on three more runs after a sacrifice fly by Klein and a two-run home run by Doug Facendo, while DeLuca drove in his second run of the game with an RBI groundout in the third.
Nelson would receive a no-decision after exiting the game in the fifth. He pitched 4.1 innings, allowing seven hits and seven runs while walking four and striking out five. Right-hander Peyton Fuller entered the game in relief of Nelson, coaxing a popup from Tech Warren to strand Facendo at second and end the threat in the fifth.
Oregon scored again on the sixth on an RBI single by Spencer Steer that scored DeLuca. The Duck center fielder had doubled with no outs and Novitske on first, but the relay threw nabbed Novitske at the plate.
Fulford then hit his second home run of the game for TTU in the bottom of the sixth, and the Red Raiders would add another run on an RBI double Jung off Fuller to narrow the lead to 11-9. The Ducks would load the bases in the top of the seventh, but Texas Tech reliever Taylor Floyd got DeLuca to ground out to end the inning.
In addition to his offensive efforts today, DeLuca made multiple difficult catches on balls hit over his head in the game, no easy feat considering the amount of wind swirling in the outfield.
Box Score Notes: Every member of the Oregon starting lineup scored at least one run in the game, while Ducks collected at least one hit and seven drove in at least one run … Aaron Zavala was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while Smith went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored … The Ducks have scored 20 runs on 29 hits in their first two games.
Notable: The eight runs in the first inning were the most Oregon has scored in a frame since plating 10 in the second inning vs. Seattle last season … The Ducks had at least 14 hits in back-to-back games for the first time since 2013 … Oregon is hitting .382 (29-for-76) over the first two games … Seven of the nine starters drove in runs … DeLuca recorded his first career three-hit game.
On Deck: Oregon continues its season-opening series with the third of four games at Texas Tech tomorrow (Sunday, Feb. 17), with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m. PT
