Road Unkind To Ducks On Saturday
02/16/19 | Men's Basketball
The Oregon men's basketball team struggled to maintain offensive flow Saturday in Corvallis, losing 72-57.
CORVALLIS — A disjointed performance on the road resulted in Oregon's first season sweep at the hands of Oregon State in nearly a decade, as the Beavers downed the Ducks 72-57 in front of 9,301 Saturday night in Gill Coliseum.
The UO men committed 18 turnovers and allowed OSU to shoot 49 percent, including 53.8 percent shooting by the Beavers as they outscored the Ducks 45-29 over the final 20 minutes. Oregon had won four of five entering the game but plays four of its last six regular-season games on the road.
How It Happened: Oregon (15-10, 6-6 Pac-12) was in command out of the gate thanks to early sharp-shooting from three-point range, which masked issues with turnovers in the first half. The Ducks went the final 5:45 of the first half without a field goal but still led 28-27 at halftime after starting the game 5-of-6 from three-point range — three of those by freshman Louis King.
"It's a tough place to play here sometimes," UO senior Paul White said. "First half defensively I thought we did a good job. Second half we gave up too many easy baskets, and it bit us."
The cold streak continued into the second half, which Oregon State opened on a 9-0 run to lead 36-28. The Ducks then caught fire, making five straight attempts, three from White and the last yet another three-pointer by King for a 42-40 lead. The hot streak was short-lived however, as OSU went on a 16-4 run to take command at 56-46, and continued to extend the lead over the final few minutes.
"They played pretty well defensively, but for us it was one of those games where the ball just wasn't going in," White said.
Who Stood Out: King finished 5-of-7 from three-point range to end the night with 20 points, and he added a team-high eight rebounds. White scored 12 — eight of which came during the UO spurt early in the second half. Miles Norris provided some highlights defensively in the first half, blocking three shots on a night Kenny Wooten was relatively quiet after battling illness earlier in the week.
What It Means: The Ducks were swept in the season series by Oregon State for the first time since 2009-10. The loss hurt Oregon's chances of moving up into the top four in the Pac-12 standings, and into position for a first-round bye in the conference tournament.
Up Next: The Ducks remain on the road next week, beginning at Southern California on Thursday (6 p.m., ESPN).
