The Oregon women’s tennis team won the final five singles matches on Saturday to take down San Diego, 5-2.
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon women's tennis team came from behind on Saturday, winning the final five singles matches to defeat San Diego, 5-2, at the Student Tennis Center.
How It Happened: Despite a solid 6-1 win at the No. 2 doubles spot, Oregon (6-3) surrendered the first point of the day after dropping matches on courts one and three.
San Diego (2-2) carried their momentum from doubles over to singles, winning at the No. 6 spot to take an early 2-0 lead over the Ducks. But that would be it for the Toreros as the Ducks took control and won out in a dominating fashion.
Paiton Wagner was the first player to put Oregon on the board after claiming a 6-3, 6-2 win at the No. 4 spot. No. 55 Shweta Sangwan finished shortly after Wagner, downing No. 62 Solymar Colling in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, at the top spot.
After playing solid singles on Friday against Montana, sophomore Rifanty Kahfiani continued to roll, taking down her opponent, 6-0, 6-2, giving the Ducks their first lead of the day.
Despite trailing early in the first set, Daniela Nasser fought back at the No. 2 spot to claim a 7-5, 6-1 victory and clinch the match for the Ducks.
Although the Ducks had already secured the victory over the Toreros, freshman Allison Mulville played out her match where she went on to win in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Quotable:
Courtney Nagle, Head Coach
On her message to the team after losing the doubles point…
"I told them not to let that doubles point define the rest of the match and that we could go out and turn it around … I just challenged them to erase that and not let that doubles point determine the rest of the match."
Daniela Nasser, Senior
On today's match...
"We knew we couldn't underestimate them, they have had pretty good results so far. We played them last year and it was a battle … In singles we're confident in our endurance and our stamina, we know we can fight until the end."
