Ducks in Fifth at The Prestige
02/18/19 | Men's Golf
LA QUINTA, Calif. – Oregon sits in fifth place after shooting 6 over in round one of The Prestige Presented by Charles Schwab at the PGA West Greg Norman Course Monday. Ryan Gronlund highlighted the opening round for the Ducks, shooting a 2-under 69 to put him in a tie for sixth, four shots off the lead.
How it Happened: Gronlund quickly moved into red figures with an eagle on the par-5 12th hole after making a pair of pars to start his day. He dropped a shot each at holes 15 and 18 to make the turn at even par. Birdies at one and five got Gronlund back to 2 under before he made bogey at the par-4 sixth. He closed with a birdie at the par-4 ninth to finish 2 under.
Kevin Geniza played steady golf for most of his opening round, making four birdies and three bogeys in the first 16 holes to get to 1 under. He stumbled at the par-5 eighth hole, making a nine to drop back to 3 over, however he responded with a finishing birdie at nine to shoot a 2-over 73.
Edwin Yi got off to a rocky start, bogeying three of his first four holes, but turned things around with three birdies in a five-hole stretch around the turn. He was even through 11 holes but made a bogey and a double bogey in his last seven holes to give him an opening round 3-over 74.
Freshman Yin Ho Yue made his first career start and shot a 3-over 74. He was 1 under through 13, but went four over in the last five holes and is tied for 36th.
No. 1 Oklahoma State leads after round one at 6 under while Stanford's Brandon Wu is in front in the individual race after shooting a 6-under 65.
