ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Oregon track and field team closed out its third weekend of competition with three wins and a handful of personal and season bests Saturday at the Don Kirby Invitational.
Less than 24 hours after breaking the UO record at 200 meters, senior Cravon Gillespie became the Ducks' No. 2 performer at 60 meters with his 6.61 outing in Saturday's final. He now sits 15th on the national performance list after the conversion (+.02) for altitude. On the strength of his weekend showing, Gillespie has NCAA top-16 marks at 60 and 200 meters.
The Ducks' first win of the day came from sophomore Jasmin Reed at 60 meters. She was the event's top qualifier with a personal-best time of 7.34 in the preliminary rounds. Reed had a time of 7.35 in the final.
Braxton Canady and Emily Sloan both ran to runner-up—and top collegian—finishes in the 60-meter hurdles. Canady posted a season-best time of 7.74 while Sloan lowered her best to 8.21 which also translates to No. 4 in program history. The time also puts her in the top 20 of the national performance list. Teammate Kaylah Robinson posted a PR of her own with a time of 8.19 in the prelims.
The duo finished 2-3 in the hurdle final behind former UO standout Sasha Wallace.
Redshirt junior Tristan James produced a win in the triple jump with the help of a personal best. With the victory already secured, James got out to 15.79m/51-9.75 on his final attempt of the day. The mark adds more than nine inches to his previous best and puts James just outside the national top 20 this season.
Notable: Spenser Schmidt moved up to No. 6 on the program's all-time list at 60 meters with his time of 6.71 in Saturday's prelim … freshman Lexi Ellis (12.55m/41-2.25) became the No. 5 UO performer in the triple jump … women's 4x400-meter relay team of Makenzie Dunmore, Hannah Waller, Iman Brown and Kerissa D'Arpino combined for a time of 3:40.55 and a win.
Next: With the postseason approaching, the Ducks are scheduled to compete at next weekend's UW Last Chance in Seattle and Alex Wilson Invitational in South Bend, Ind. Oregon will then be down to the MPSF Championships (Feb. 22-23) and NCAA Championships (March 8-9).
