Clutch Goldfarb Gives Ducks Comeback Win
03/10/19 | Baseball
HONOLULU – Jakob Goldfarb delivered a game-winning three-run double in the eighth inning to give Oregon a 4-3 come-from-behind win over Hawaii Saturday at Les Murakami Stadium.
How it Happened: Goldfarb laced a bases-clearing double just inside third base, scoring Sam Novitske, Spencer Steer and Gabe Matthews to put Oregon in front, 4-3. The Ducks loaded the bases on singles by Novitske and Steer followed by a walk to Matthews, setting the table for Goldfarb.
Nico Tellache came on in relief to start the eighth inning and got the final six outs of the game to lock up his third save. Hawaii got two runners on in both the eighth and the ninth innings, but Tellache buckled down and got out of the jam both times to secure the win.
Alex Baeza got Hawaii on the board in the first inning with a two-out RBI single, before Logan Pouelsen followed two batters later with a run-scoring single of his own, making it 2-0.
Oregon (9-4) pushed across its first run of the game in the top of the fifth, cutting the Hawaii lead to 2-1. After Goldfarb reached on an error to open the inning, advanced to second on a single by Aaron Zavala and to third on a sacrifice bunt, Kyle Froemke drove him in with an RBI groundout.
The Rainbow Warriors (8-7) added a run in the sixth inning to go back in front by two. After a couple of walks and a sacrifice bunt to begin the inning, Daylen Calicdan delivered a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.
Quotable: Head coach George Horton
On Jakob Goldfarb…
"There were some pitches tonight that I thought he took some good passes at. But that was good for him and good for us because we do stress using the whole field and he ends up hitting one down the third-base line for the game-winner."
On the win…
"We've been a good first-half team, but not a second-half team. Tonight the roles were reversed. Their guy was excellent at keeping us off balance and he was tough on our guys. But I'm proud of our guys for sticking with it and finding a way to get it done."
Box Score Notes: Oregon won for the first time this season when trailing after seven innings … Novitske has reached base in all 13 games this season … He has gotten on multiple times in 11 of the 13 games … Keaton Chase picked up his second win, throwing two shutout innings without giving up a hit … Goldfarb turned in his third multi-RBI game with his three-RBI day … Ducks' pitching held Hawaii to 3-for-16 with runners on, stranding 13 Rainbow Warrior runners.
On Deck: The Ducks will close out their series at Hawaii at 4:05 p.m. PT Sunday. Cole Stringer (1-0, 0.73) will start for the Ducks while Hawaii counters with lefty Dominic DeMiero (1-0, 1.29).
