Ducks Post NCAA Leader, Seven Wins in SDSU Finale

EUGENE, Ore. – Headlined by an NCAA-leading performance by senior Cravon Gillespie, the University of Oregon track and field team capped the Aztec Invitational with a combined seven wins, eight personal bests and three program's top-10 marks. Gillespie, a two-time winner Saturday, ran the second leg of the Ducks' victorious 4x100-meter relay and clocked a slightly windy 10.04 (+2.2) over 100 meters.

Gillespie's performance was just off his all-conditions best of 10.02 (+2.3) from last year's NCAA meet in Eugene. Coming into the weekend, 10.25 stood as the national leader at 100 meters. Overall, the Ducks put six in the top 20 of the event including Oraine Palmer (10.27) and Spenser Schmidt (10.55) in fourth and 10th, respectively.
Gillespie and Palmer teamed with Braxton Canady and Rieker Daniel to get the baton around the track in 39.33 to win the 4x100-meter relay. The time stands as the No. 4 relay mark in UO history and, based on times entering the weekend, ranks third nationally early in the outdoor season.
The Women of Oregon had the first win of the day with the 4x100-meter team of Makenzie Dunmore, Venessa D'Arpino, Jasmin Reed and Brianna Duncan posting a time of 43.82, good for the No. 2 time in the NCAA.
The Ducks also completed the 100/110m hurdles sweep behind the efforts of freshmen Emily Sloan (13.78) and Eric Edwards Jr. (14.08), respectively.
Oregon picked up a pair of wins in the field events, another sweep in the javelin. Sophomore Keira McCarrell opened her busy day with a day's best of 48.78m/160-0 to come away with first. Redshirt junior Jackson VanVuren followed with a victory in the men's event. Already in the lead, he extended the margin with a mark of 68.13m/223-6—within two feet of his PR—in the sixth round.
McCarrell and the other Oregon multi-eventers Dalen Hargett, Tori Sloan and Max Vollmer each lined up for three or four events in preparation for future heptathlons and decathlons. Hargett, a transfer from Montana State, posted personal bests in two events (110m hurdles, pole vault).
Junior Kiana Phelps had a successful opener with a pair of outdoor bests Saturday. In the discus, she had two marks better than her previous PR including her sixth-round toss of 54.74m/179-7 which moves her into a tie for third on the all-time program history. Maddie Rabing, off a runner-up showing Friday in the hammer, was also second in the shot put with Phelps right behind her in third.
