UO Shares 36-Hole Lead at Duck Invitational

CRESWELL, Ore. – Oregon shot 2 under in round one before grinding out a 3-over 291 in cold, rainy conditions in round two to finish day one of the Duck Invitational tied for the lead at 1 over Monday at Emerald Valley Golf Club. The Ducks share the lead with Oregon State while the two schools are three shots clear of third-place Nevada.
Ryan Gronlund is in second place in the individual race, two shots off the lead while Edwin Yi and Sam Foust sit in a tie for sixth at even par.
How it Happened – Round One: Gronlund got off to a hot start, turning in a bogey-free 4-under 32 on the front nine. He made birdies at two and three then again at seven and eight, but dropped a pair of shots on the inward half with bogeys at 14 and 15 to finish with a 2-under 70.
Kevin Geniza started his day on hole two and made pars on his first two holes before dropping a shot at four. He bounced back though, with birdies on three of his last four holes on the front nine to get to 2 under. Geniza made one bogey and a birdie over his last 10 holes to shoot a 2-under 70.
Despite a stretch of four straight bogeys at holes six through nine, Edwin Yi put together an opening round of 1-over 73. Yin Ho Yue also turned in a 73 to round out the counting scores for the Ducks.
A trio of Oregon players competing as individuals also put together solid rounds. Sam Foust and Tom Gueant each shot a 1-under 71 while Kymer Li carded a career-low even-par 72.
Round Two: Gronlund played a fairly steady front nine, opening with a birdie at the first but bogeying the par-4 fourth to shoot even heading out. He bogeyed 14 before making back-to-back birdies at 15 and 16, but dropped a shot on 17. Gronlund closed with a par at the par-5 18th despite nearly holing out for eagle and shot an even-par 72.
Yi and Thomas Mulligan each shot a 1-under 71 to lead the way for the Ducks in tough afternoon conditions. Yi bogeyed the par-4 fourth, but bounced back with back-to-back birdies at seven and eight to make the turn at 1 under. He made two birdies and two bogeys on the back nine to shoot even par coming in. Mulligan, playing as an individual, carded five birdies, but made a pair of bogeys and a double bogey.
After shooting a 4-over 76 in round one, Craig Ronne bounced back with an even-par 72 while Yue shot a 4-over 76 to round out the counting scores for Oregon. Foust shot a 1-over 73 and is tied for sixth individually.
