Ducks Lose Lead Late, Fall at Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. – Oregon took a three-run lead into the bottom of the eighth inning, but Portland plated five runs in the inning to hand the Ducks a 5-3 loss Tuesday at Joe Etzel Field.
How it Happened: The Pilots (9-4) scored five runs on six base hits in the bottom of the eighth inning to go in front for good. After Oregon reliever Brett Walker got the leadoff man to fly out, six straight Portland batters got hits, capped off by a go-ahead two-run double by Gabe Skoro.
Oregon (7-3) drew first blood in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead. Cameron Campbell drove in Jakob Goldfarb from second with an RBI double down the right field line on a slash bunt.
Goldfarb drove in a couple of insurance runs in the eighth, to make it a 3-0 Oregon lead. After Jonny DeLuca worked a leadoff walk, Spencer Steer was hit by a pitch and Gabe Matthews sacrificed the runners to second and third, Goldfarb drove them in with a two-run single that went off the first baseman's glove on a diving attempt.
Ducks' starter Kolby Somers delivered a strong effort in his first start of the year, throwing four shutout innings while striking out five and allowing three hits.
Box Score Notes: Somers' five strikeouts are his most in a game since he fanned six against Stanford (March 31, 2018) … Sam Novitske turned in his third multi-hit game of the season, finishing 2-for-4 … He also reached base for the 10th straight game to start the season, and has gotten on multiple times in nine of the 10 … Matthews turned in his fourth multi-hit game of the season and extended his hitting streak to six games … Hunter Breault, Peyton Fuller and Christian Ciuffetelli all pitched scoreless innings in relief of Somers.
On Deck: The Ducks will open a four-game series at Hawaii Thursday at 8:35 p.m.
