Charlton Improves to 15-0 in Dual Play
04/12/19 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – Freshman Joshua Charlton picked up a singles win which stood as the Ducks' lone point in a 4-1 setback to No. 13 UCLA Friday afternoon in Los Angeles. With his win, Charlton improved to 15-0 in dual play this season. The Ducks are now 13-6 overall with a 1-4 mark in Pac-12 play.
Up Next: Oregon is back at it Saturday to take on No. 11 USC for the team's second top-15 opponent in as many days. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. (PT). The Ducks are back in Eugene next weekend with matches against Stanford (April 19) and California (April 20) to close out the regular season.
Playing at the No. 4 spot in the lineup, Charlton posted a 6-2, 7-6(5) victory over Ben Goldberg who has three wins over ranked opponents this year. Charlton is now 19-3 this year, moving into a tie for second on the team with Riki Oshima.
Charlton's win prevented a UCLA (13-4, 5-0 Pac-12) sweep in Friday's matchup. With the doubles point in hand, the Bruins moved out to a 3-0 lead with wins on courts one and two. Oregon got into the match with Charlton and Charles Roberts winning first sets on courts four and five, respectively. At the No. 3 spot, Oshima took a set off No. 49 Govind Nanda and was in a third set when the match was decided.
The early stages of doubles played even with all three courts tied at 2-all through four games. However, the Bruins pulled away for victories on courts one and three to take a 1-0 advantage into singles.
