Steer Claims Another National Honor
04/16/19 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) named Spencer Steer its National Hitter of the Week on Tuesday.
Steer (Long Beach, Calif. / Millikan HS) batted .474 (9-for-19) with three home runs, 12 RBI and six runs scored leading Oregon to a 3-1 record with a road win against the nationally-ranked Beavers and a series win at WSU. Two of Steer's three home runs were grand slams, including a two-out, game-tying shot in the top of the ninth inning on Sunday. It was the junior's second home run of the day, marking the second time this season he has hit a pair of homers in the same game.
Steer's first grand slam came in an 11-8 win in game two of the Washington State series. He went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored in a 21-3 win in the series opener with the Cougars. Against WSU, Steer batted .500 (7-for-14) with three homers, 11 RBI and five runs scored. He slugged 1.143 and reached base at a .563 clip.
In Oregon's 12-8 win over No. 7 Oregon State last Tuesday, Steer delivered a two-out RBI single in the Ducks' four-run eighth inning that broke an 8-8 tie.
Steer also extended his hitting streak to 14 with hits in all four games last week. He added a hit in Monday's win at Gonzaga to run the streak to 15 and tie the longest hitting streak in modern program history.
The Ducks' junior shortstop is just the second Oregon position player to earn the honor, joining Mitchell Tolman who claimed the award in both 2013 and 2014. Three former Oregon pitchers were named the NCBWA Pitcher of the Week: Justin LaTempa (2010), Cole Irvin (2014) and David Peterson (2017).
The NCBWA honor was the fourth of the week for Steer. He was also named the Pac-12 Conference Player of the Week, one of Collegiate Baseball's National Players of the Week and College Sports Madness National Field Player of the Week.
