BERKELEY, Calif. – Oregon rallied from an eight-run deficit but couldn't come all the way back in a 10-5 loss at California in Pac-12 Conference action at Evans Diamond on Saturday.
How it happened: Cal took an early lead scoring a pair of runs with some help from the Ducks. After retiring the first four hitters of the game, Oregon starter Kolby Somers walked three straight Golden Bears with one out in the second.
Designated hitter Garret Nielsen made Somers pay lining a two-RBI hit to right-center field to score two for a 2-0 lead.
Cal pushed the lead to 8-0 with six runs in the third. The Golden Bears got six hits in the inning including a pair of two-RBI singles from Darren Baker and Nielson.
Oregon rallied with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Jonny DeLuca blasted a deep home run over the right-center field wall after Gabe Matthews reached on an error. Aaron Zavala, the next hitter, doubled to right center and came around to score on a Baker throwing error on a Jakob Goldfarb ground ball.
The Ducks added a run in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to four. Spencer Steer drove in Tanner Smith, who reached on a one-out double to right, with a base hit up the middle.
Cal added single runs in the fifth and seventh innings, while Oregon got one back in the ninth on a bases loaded Steer walk. The Golden Bears wrapped up a series win with the victory.
Box score notes: Oregon has hit 11 home runs in its last five road games … Steer and DeLuca both finished with two RBI … Steer tied Mitchell Tolman (2013-15) for the most multi-RBI games in school history with 32 … It was his 11th multi-RBI game of the season, matching his 2018 total which ranks in a tie for sixth all-time … Steer moved into a tie with Kyle Garlick (2011-14) for third all-time in career RBI with 108 … Steer has 24 RBI in the last 11 road games … Goldfarb had his 13th career outfield assist, the most in school history … Nico Tellache struck out a career-high seven batters in three innings of relief … Matthews started his 128th consecutive game, tying Tolman for the longest streak in school history … Oregon has committed just one error in the last six games.
