Steer Spectacular Again in Loss
05/19/19 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – Spencer Steer drove in two more runs and dazzled defensively again, but it wasn't enough as Oregon dropped the rubber match to USC, 8-2, Sunday at Dedeaux Field.
The Ducks' junior third baseman inched closer to tying a couple of program records and made another incredible catch in foul territory in the seventh inning.
How it Happened: The Trojans (23-27-1, 11-14-1 Pac-12) got on the board first with three runs in the bottom of the second. After a pair of singles to open the inning, CJ Stubbs drove in the first run with a two-out single before Ben Ramirez plated the next two with a single one batter later.
Steer provided an answer for Oregon (27-26, 10-17 Pac-12) with a clutch two-out, two-run single in the top of the third to make it 3-2. Steer scored Cameron Campbell and Max Foxcroft after both worked walks to begin the inning before moving up on a Sam Novitske sacrifice bunt.
USC added a pair of unearned runs in the sixth inning to make it a 5-2 game. After Foxcroft committed an error on a double play attempt with one out, Brandon Perez drove in two runs with a two-out, two-run double down the left field line. The Trojans broke things open with a three-run homer in the seventh to make it 8-2.
Notables: Steer's two RBI put him at 127 for his career, just one behind Mitchell Tolman (2013-15) for the program record … He's also one RBI away from tying Ryon Healy (2013) for the Oregon single-season RBI record of 56 … Steer was hit by a pitch for the 39th time in his career, tying Tolman for second-most in school history … He finished the weekend with seven RBI, driving in multiple runs in every game, giving him a UO record 37 career multi-RBI games … Ryne Nelson struck out two out of the bullpen to give him 102 for the season, fourth-most in school history … Only David Peterson and Tyler Anderson have struck out 100 batters in a season at Oregon … Ducks' starter Kolby Somers kept the Ducks in it, throwing 5.2 innings and striking out three while allowing five runs, three earned.
On Deck: The Ducks will play at UC Riverside in a non-conference game Monday at 1 p.m. before returning home to close the regular season against UCLA beginning Thursday at 6 p.m.
