Vollmer Leads Pac-12 Decathlon After Day One
05/04/19 | Track and Field
EUGENE, Ore. – Four personal bests has freshman Max Vollmer in first place of the decathlon after day one of competition at the Pac-12 Multi-Events Championships in Tucson, Ariz. Through five events, he leads the way with 4,113 points with teammate Dalen Hargett sitting in seventh place. Day two of the decathlon begins Sunday at 4 p.m. with the 110-meter hurdles.
The Ducks are also in scoring position in the heptathlon where sophomore Keira McCarrell is eighth with 3,118 points through four events. Saturday also featured a trio of wins for the men's distance crew at the Linfield Open in McMinnville, Ore.
This weekend officially marks the beginning of championship season for Oregon. The team will return to Tucson for the Pac-12 Championships (May 11-12) where the Men of Oregon are the 12-time defending champions and the Women of Oregon have won nine of the past 10 conference crowns.
Vollmer opened the day with a new PR of 10.84 in the 100 meters and went on to establish new lifetime best in the shot put (15.03m/49-3.75), high jump (1.89m/6-2.25) and 400 meters (48.38). He took over the top spot after his season-best long jump. Vollmer won three of the five events Saturday, finishing no lower than third throughout the day.
Hargett will enter day two of the Pac-12 multis meet with 3,378 points. The highlights of his day saw a new personal best in the long jump (6.36m/20-10.5) and a season-best time to wrap up the day in the 400 meters.
After a slow start, McCarrell was in 12th place through two events but moved into the top eight with the help of an outdoor best in the shot put. On her final attempt, she had a mark of 12.69m/41-7.75 which was good for 707 points and the event win. The throw was just off her lifetime best of 12.80m/42-0 from this year's MPSF Championships during the indoor season.
The heptathlon will resume Sunday at 5:30 p.m. with the long jump, javelin and 800 meters on the schedule.
James West (1:49.77) led a 1-2-3 finish for the Ducks in the 800 meters at the Linfield Open. He was followed closely by Charlie Hunter (1:49.99) and Reed Brown (1:50.12), respectively. All three are two days removed from a trio of top-30 national marks in the 1,500 meters at the Payton Jordan Invitational.
In a season-best performance, Austin Tamagno crossed in a time of 3:47.38 and took the top spot at 1,500 meters. Levi Thomet won the 5,000 meters by more than 19 seconds.
