Ducks Drop Series Opener
05/09/19 | Softball
Oregon dropped the first game of its final series of the season Thursday, 4-0 to Arizona State.
EUGENE, Ore. — Scoring chances were minimal Thursday at Jane Sanders Stadium, with Arizona State taking better advantage of its opportunities to come away with a 4-0 victory that kicked off the final series of the season for the Oregon softball team.
ASU scored three in the first while the Ducks loaded the bases in the second and put two on in the sixth but couldn't push a run across.
How It Happened: UO starter Jordan Dail settled in after walking the first three hitters, but all three of those runners scored on a one-out double by Jade Gortarez. The Sun Devils added an insurance run by converting a double steal in the fifth.
The Ducks (22-28) loaded the bases on three one-out walks in the second, but the next two hitters struck out. Oregon's lone hit of the day was a leadoff double in the second by Haley Cruse, but she was stranded at second despite a two-out walk by Rachel Cid.
At the Plate: The Ducks were set down in order in the first, third, fourth, fifth and seventh innings.
"I don't think we came out strong enough today; I'm pretty disappointed with the way we played," UO coach Melyssa Lombardi said. "… I don't think we saw Oregon softball today. We're much more capable at the plate than we showed."
In the Circle: Dail threw her 23rd complete game of the season, allowing four runs on seven hits and four walks, with five strikeouts. She was in command after the sluggish start, but Oregon didn't muster any offense to back her.
"Once she settled down, I thought she pitched great," Lombardi said. "What got her a bit today was the first inning, to walk three and give up the big hit."
Up Next: The Ducks and Sun Devils meet again Friday (5 p.m., Pac-12). It's Oregon's "Strike Out Cancer" game at Jane Sanders Stadium.
