LAST TIME OUT
Oregon opened its 2019-20 season by finishing fifth at the rain-shortened Husky Invitational. The Ducks completed the 36-hole first day of the tournament at 4 under before the final round was cancelled due to rain. Nate Stember led the way for Oregon, opening with a 3-under 69 in his first collegiate round and following that up with a 1-under 71 in round two. He became the first UO freshman since 2013 to begin his career with back-to-back under par rounds. Craig Ronne and Tom Gueant both finished in the top 20, with Ronne coming in tied for 17th at 1 under and Gueant shooting a pair of even par rounds to finish tied for 19th. Yin Ho Yue placed tied for 24th at 1 over while Kymer Li came in tied for eighth as an individual at the Olympic College Invitational.Â
FRESH FACES
Oregon welcomes four freshmen into the program in 2019-20. Nate Stember, the 2018 Oregon Golf Association Junior Golfer of the Year joins the program following a decorated junior golf career. The Portland, Ore. native won four major junior tournaments in 2018 and qualified for the 2018 U.S. Junior Amateur. Edwin Kuang of Murrieta, Calif. was named the 2019 Golfer of the Year by the Riverside Press Enterprise and became the first Murrieta Valley HS player since Rickie Fowler to claim the Southwestern League individual title, winning it as both a junior and senior. Austin Carnese helped lead Jesuit High School to a pair of Oregon 6A state titles and Gian Luca Martinez won a number of junior tournaments in Southern California.
SUPER SOPHOMORES
Oregon returns a trio of sophomores that saw time in the lineup and made significant contributions as freshmen. Yin Ho Yue returns after being named Pac-12 All-Freshman and finishing third on the team with a 72.82 scoring average a year ago. Craig Ronne saw action in 10 tournaments and turned in a 73.74 scoring average. He posted his best finish at the Saint Mary's Invitational where he came in third at 6 under. Tom Gueant played in five tournaments, four as a part of the lineup last year, and over the summer won the British Boys Amateur Championship in August.
ELDER STATESMAN
The lone returning player who was a part of the 2017 NCAA runner up team, Kevin Geniza brings a wealth of experience to a young Oregon team. He has played in the postseason each of his three years at Oregon and currently has a 73.97 scoring average in 26 career tournaments.Â
