Duarte's Energy Fuels 2OT Victory
01/23/20 | Men's Basketball
Oregon's junior wing finished with 30 points, 11 rebounds and eight steals in Thursday's victory over USC.
EUGENE, Ore. — Two teams that both came back from double-digit second-half deficits last week figured to go down to the wire when they faced off Thursday, and the matchup between Oregon and USC didn't disappoint.
Chris Duarte scored seven of the Ducks' first nine points in the second overtime Thursday night at Matthew Knight Arena to help the No. 12 UO men hold off the Trojans, 79-70. The Ducks (16-4, 5-2 Pac-12) had the last shot in both regulation and the first overtime but couldn't convert, finally pulling away thanks to Duarte's energy to start the second overtime.
Oregon became the first five-win team in conference play to this point in the second, with Duarte contributing 30 points, 11 rebounds and an arena-record eight steals on the night.
"His steals were huge," UO coach Dana Altman said. "He did a great job flying around, making some defensive plays. He was the difference in the game with those eight steals, no doubt about it."

How It Happened: With the game tied 67-67, Duarte corralled the tip to open the second overtime but couldn't finish at the rim. Undaunted, he jumped in front of a pass at the other end, before making two free throws that put Oregon into the lead for good. Two possessions later Duarte's three-pointer made it 74-68, and after another steal he finished a layup to pad the UO lead. Duarte and Pritchard each played 46 of 50 minutes, fighting through fatigue to earn the Ducks a win.
"When you're in that moment, you don't think about that," Duarte said. "You just play. I was just trying to play and help my team win."
The first overtime was a war of attrition, with each side made just one field goal. USC (15-4, 4-2) took the early lead on two free throws, before Oregon jumped out in front when Payton Pritchard hit a three-pointer from the corner on a baseline out-of-bounds play. The Trojans went back up on an and-one moments later, 67-65, before Duarte tied it with two free throws. A fadeaway jumper by Pritchard was off at the buzzer, forcing the second overtime.
"We had some really bad offensive possessions," Altman said. "We've got to get a lot smoother; our ball movement's got to get so much better. Lots of things to work on. But we got some big defensive stops, got some rebounds and found a way to win the game."

USC, which came back from a 21-point deficit on the same night Oregon rallied to win at Washington last week, dig out of an 11-point hole in the second half Thursday to force extra time. Duarte finished an add-one and followed with a basket off a turnover to put the Ducks up 56-45 late in the half, but the Trojans scored 11 in a row to tie the game.
Oregon ended the run when Pritchard sliced through the line for a go-ahead bucket, but USC answered with six more, including a three-pointer by Jonah Mathews for a 62-58 lead with 1:24 to go. The Ducks tied the game on baskets by CJ Walker and Pritchard, and had a chance to win at the buzzer after Duarte stole an inbounds pass. But the potential winner by Will Richardson was blocked, and the game went into overtime.

Oregon's uneven night offensively wasn't apparent from the start. The Ducks made their first five shots to lead 10-5, and went up 15-7 on a three-pointer by Duarte. Two baskets by Chandler Lawson in his first career start made it 21-15, but USC rallied and trailed just 32-30 at halftime.
Who Stood Out: Duarte became the first D-I player with at least 30 points, 11 rebounds and eight steals since Alvin Young of Niagara on Jan. 30, 1999. Pritchard added 24 points with seven assists, and Lawson had nine points with five rebounds.
Up Next: The Ducks had an extra day off before hosting UCLA on Sunday (2 p.m., FOX).
