02/18/20 | Baseball
Phoenix Ariz. – With the score tied 3-3 in the 12th inning, a wild pitch sent Grand Canyon to a 4-3 victory over Oregon Tuesday afternoon at Brazell Field in Phoenix, Ariz. Oregon redshirt junior Kenyon Yovan was 3-for-3 at the plate with two home runs and three runs scored.
How it Happened: The Lopes' Channy Ortiz scored the game-winning run after a Decker Stedman wild pitch got away from Jack Scanlon behind the plate.
In the top of the fourth of a scoreless game, Oregon (0-4) struck first. Yovan scored his first run of the game on an Aaron Zavala sacrifice fly to center. Grand Canyon answered with two runs of their own in the fourth, courtesy of a two-run home run by Dominic Grissom.
In the top of the sixth, Yovan tied the game at 2-all with a home run to left field. The home run was the Ducks' first of the year.
Grand Canyon re-took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. With runners in scoring position, Grissom drove in his third RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Drew Smith for a 3-2 Grand Canyon lead.
Yovan tied the game in the eighth when he sent the fourth pitch of the at-bat the opposite way and over the right-field fence. Yovan is the first Duck with two home runs in a game since Gabe Matthews hit two at California on April 26 last year.
The bullpen was once again solid for the Ducks. Senior Nico Tellache, and juniors Hunter Breault and Kolby Somers combined for six innings of one-hit ball.
Neither team was able to plate the winning run in the ninth, forcing the game to extra innings.
Matthews hit a double to left field in the top of the 12th, but was left stranded before Grand Canyon won the game in the bottom half of the inning.
