Ducks, Gueant Lead After Stellar Opening Round
02/21/20 | Men's Golf
PALM DESERT, Calif. – Tom Gueant fired a career-low 8-under 64 and holds a two-shot individual lead while Oregon leads as a team at 10 under after round one of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate Friday at the Classic Club.
The Ducks are one shot clear of Charlotte and two shots ahead of No. 17 Auburn while Gueant leads the individual race by two shots over Mats Ege of CSUN.
How it Happened: Gueant started and stayed hot as he birdied three of his first four holes to get to 3 under right off the bat. After making his lone mistake of the day with a double bogey at five, he ripped off three straight birdies and made the turn at 4 under. The sophomore made a birdie at the par-4 10th then leveled off for the next six holes with just a birdie and five pars over that stretch. He then closed with back-to-back birdies to finish off his stellar round.
Nate Stember turned in a 2-under 70 and is tied for 14th. The freshman opened his day with a birdie and capped off a steady front nine with a birdie at nine, following a bogey at six. The freshman had an up-and-down final five holes, making three birdies and two bogeys over that stretch to shoot 1 under on the back nine.
Kevin Geniza birdied both par 5s on the front nine but doubled the difficult par-3 sixth to make the turn at even. He made birdies at 12 and 15 on the back nine before bogeying the par-4 16th, shooting 1 under coming in.
Yin Ho Yue and Craig Ronne each shot a 1-over 73 to be the final counting score for the Ducks, while Craig Ronne turned in a 2-over 74. Padraic Sim turned in a 2-over 74 in his first round as a Duck and is tied for 53rd, playing as an individual.
