Ducks Complete Sweep Of Nevada

The Oregon baseball team beat the Wolf Pack on Sunday at PK Park, 9-1.
EUGENE, Ore. — Robert Ahlstrom threw six scoreless innings and Jack Scanlon hit his first career home run as part of a three-hit day to help the Oregon baseball team complete a sweep of Nevada on Sunday, 9-1, before 965 fans at PK Park.
After going winless in four games during the opening week of the season, the Ducks swept their first home series of the spring and improved to 3-4 under first-year head coach Mark Wasikowski.
"We showed much better mentality," Wasikowski said. "The pitchers threw the ball very, very well. It seemed like we played consistent defense today. There was some timely hitting. It was clearly a weekend to be happy about and to build upon."
How It Happened: Oregon jumped on Nevada right out of the gate, as Tanner Smith doubled into the left-field corner with one out in the first and came home on a fielder's choice off the bat of Kenyon Yovan. In the bottom of the second, Aaron Zavala reached on an error to leadoff the inning, and two batters later Scanlon crushed his first collegiate homer onto the roof of the Ducks' player development area in right field.

That was more than enough for Ahlstrom, who was only in real trouble once, after the Wolf Pack got back-to-back singles leading off the second. Oregon's junior left-hander retired the next three hitters in a row to escape that jam, and also pitched around two-out baserunners in the third, fourth and sixth.
The Ducks added on in the fifth when Gavin Grant singled to lead off the inning and came home on a sacrifice fly by Smith. The floodgates opened in the seventh, all with two outs — Sam Novitske, Smith and Yovan all walked, and Gabe Matthews greeted a Nevada reliever by lacing the first pitch he saw into the gap in right-center for a three-run double and a 7-0 lead.
The Ducks made it 9-0 in the eighth. A.J. Miller walked as a pinch hitter to lead off, Scanlon moved him over with a one-out single for his third hit of the game and Novitske plated Miller with an RBI single. Smith followed with another productive out, driving in Scanlon with a groundball to second base.
On The Mound: Ahlstrom pitched into the sixth for the second outing in a row. But after allowing four earned runs in his first start of the season, he blanked the Wolf Pack on Sunday to cap a series that began with consecutive 3-2 wins by the Ducks.
"It was awesome getting those first two close games, obviously," Ahlstrom said. "Coming in here I just had the mentality of finishing, trying to get my team a chance to get the sweep, and we did so it was awesome today."

Scanlon was behind the plate for all three wins, and played a clean game Sunday while also collecting three hits. He said Ahlstrom's fastball command allowed him to get ahead of hitters throughout his six innings of work.
"Robby is a real competitor; he's nothing but fun to catch," Scanlon said. "He just wants the ball. There's no one on this team that wants the ball more than Robby; I'm not saying that to discredit anybody else, but he's a gamer and he wants to win every time."
Keaton Chase and Hunter Breault followed Ahlstrom with shutout innings, before Christian Ciuffetelli pitched the ninth.

At The Plate: Novitske and Matthews each had two hits, and Smith scored twice and also drove in two runs. Scanlon also finished with two runs and two RBIs, and he conducted a postgame interview with his home-run ball tucked safely in his back pocket.
"It's just a surreal experience to be able to play on this field and be able to be with my teammates, be able to celebrate that," Scanlon said of his homer. "Touching home and seeing how every single one of my teammates was out there being happy for me is all I can ask for. So, I'm just happy to be here and I can't wait to keep getting better and put more W's in the board."
