Ducks Tie For Third Behind Chacon's 5-Under 67

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Freshman Briana Chacon tied the Bruin Wave Invitational single-round record with a 5-under 67 on Tuesday to lead the No. 16 ranked Oregon women's golf team to its best showing of the week in the final round at the San Luis Obispo Country Club.
The Ducks improved by five strokes from Monday's second round and had the best score in the field on Tuesday with a 2-over 290, putting them in a tie for third overall with Northwestern. Oregon finished just two strokes back of No. 14 UCLA for second and only four strokes behind winner and No. 2 ranked USC.
"We are proud of our team's performance this week," said head coach Derek Radley. "We improved by a few shots each day and are proud to have had the low team score in the final round."
Chacon flew up six spots on the individual leaderboard with her terrific final round to finish in fourth place overall, the best finish by a Duck this season. Chacon matched Northwestern's Kelly Sim – who finished as the co-medalist with Emma Spitz from UCLA – for the tournament record with her 5-under 67.
"Briana's performance was very impressive, although I'm not surprised," said Radley. "She was on a mission to play well for herself and for her team. The mental toughness she exhibits is contagious and crucial for the success of this team moving forward."
How it Happened: Chacon was stellar from the get-go on Tuesday, making birdie on her first hole and back-to-back birdies on holes 6 and 7 to shoot 3 under on the front end. The Whittier, Calif., native opened the back nine with three birdies in four holes and was 6 under through her first 14 holes. Chacon finished with six birdies and 11 pars while recording just one bogey.
The Ducks also got a solid day from Alexis Phadungmartvorakul, who fired a 1-over 73 for the second straight round. The junior was 2 over on the front nine and 3 over through 15 holes before finishing strong with two birdies in her final three holes. Phadungmartvorakul finished 6 over and in a tie for 11th place overall in her first tournament of the spring season.
"Alexis had a very solid week producing another steady result," said Radley. "She is instrumental to our team's success and I am extremely proud of her progress."
Freshman Sofie Kibsgaard Nielsen – the 27th ranked player in the nation – gave the Ducks three players in the individual top 20, finishing in a tie for 19th overall at plus-10 for her sixth straight top-20 finish to open her collegiate career. Nielsen scuffled a bit out of the gate on Tuesday with four straight bogeys, but bounced back nicely with two birdies in the next three holes and had just one bogey the rest of the round to finish with a 3-over 75.
"Sofie didn't have her 'A' game this week," said Radley, "but she still found a way to yet another top-20 finish."
Sophomore Tze-Han (Heather) Lin rounded out the counting scores on Tuesday, matching Nielsen with a 3-over 75. Lin finished in a tie for 31st overall at 14 over.
