02/29/20 | Track and Field
SEATTLE, Wash. – Entering the weekend in need of a national qualifier, redshirt freshman Max Vollmer responded with a score of 5,843 points to win the heptathlon Saturday at the MPSF Championships. In addition to Vollmer's effort, the Ducks tallied seven top-three finishes and four UO top-10 marks on day two of the MPSF meet.
The Women of Oregon finished first in the team standings with 104.5 points over the course of the two-day competition. It marked the women's fifth MPSF team title. On the men's side, the Ducks—with their distance crew in Boston this weekend—were seventh overall.
Up Next: The 2020 indoor season culminates March 13-14 at the NCAA Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. National qualifiers—top 16 individuals, top 12 relays—are set to be announced Tuesday, March 3 by 7 p.m. (PT).
Vollmer finished the two-day, seven-event competition with four personal bests including two Saturday. Based on results posted around the country, Vollmer's score (5,843) ranks sixth in the NCAA this season and No. 3 on the UO top-10 list behind Ashton Eaton (6,499) and Dakotah Keys (5,942). Vollmer was an All-American in the decathlon during the 2019 outdoor season.
The UO women accounted for five of the team's seven top-three finishes including a runner-up finish in the triple jump by freshman Dominique Ruotolo (12.95m/42-6). The Ducks also picked up bronze efforts from Amanda Gehrich at 3,000 meters, Emily Sloan in the 60-meter hurdles, Kiana Phelps in the shot put and from the 4x400-meter relay of Gabby Beauvais, Danyel White, Iman Brown and Hannah Waller.
On her final attempt of the day, Phelps got the implement out to a personal-best of 16.07m/52-8.75, which doubles as the No. 3 mark in program history. Phelps entered day fourth on the all-time list and surpassed UO Hall of Fame member Quenna Beasley (1981-85) with Saturday's throw.
For the second time in as many days, junior Rieker Daniel lowered his PR in the 60 meters. In Saturday's final, he crossed the line in 6.71—just .01 faster than Friday's prelim time—to move into a tie for No. 7 on Oregon's career list. Daniel was the Ducks' top performer in the event, getting up for sixth place in the event.
Notable: Redshirt sophomore Jaimie Robinson posted a season best of 12.30m/40-4.25 in the triple jump … strengthens her hold on the No. 8 spot on the UO top 10 … redshirt senior Ben Milligan was third in the high jump with a mark of 2.14m/7-0.25 … his third jump of 7-0 or higher during the indoor season … Brianna Duncan (60 meters), Waller (400 meters), Susan Ejore (800 meters) and Maddie Rabing (shot put) all finished fourth in their respective event.
