NCAA Record Results in National Honor
02/04/20 | Track and Field
EUGENE, Ore. – In recognition of its record-breaking performance at the Razorback Invitational, the Ducks' distance-medley relay was collectively named the USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week. The quartet of James West, Jacob Miller, Charlie Hunter and Cooper Teare established an NCAA record of 9:24.52, more than one second faster than the previous collegiate best.
Tuesday's announcement marks the 14th time Oregon has earned USTFCCCA national honors, and the second time one of its relay teams picked up weekly honors. The Women of Oregon were recognized in 2017 for their 4x100- and 4x200-meter performances at the Mt. SAC Relays in April 2017.
West (2:53.53), Miller (47.47), Hunter (1:48.08) and Teare (3:55.45) combined to break the 12-year-old record of 9:25.97 set by Texas during the 2008 season. Both times were run at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark. The Ducks won last weekend's race by more than 11 seconds ahead of a field that included Arkansas, Florida, Stanford and Texas.
West and Teare returned to the track the following day for individual wins at 800 meters and in the mile, respectively.
In addition to breaking the NCAA record, the UO foursome knocked more than two seconds off the old school mark of 9:26.78 set by past program standouts Mac Fleet, Mike Berry, Elijah Greer and Matthew Centrowitz in 2011.
The Ducks' DMR effort is No. 1 in the nation, and was one of the 14 NCAA top-20 marks. Overall, the Men and Women of Oregon have collected 16 top-20 marks through its first two meets of the indoor campaign. By way of a productive weekend in Arkansas, both teams are up eight spots to No. 9 in the latest release of the USTFCCCA national rankings.
Up Next: Following the upcoming off weekend, the Ducks will send split squads to the Don Kirby Elite Invitational (Feb. 13-14) in Albuquerque, N.M., and Husky Classic (Feb. 14-15) in Seattle.
