Ducks Off to Solid Start

WAIKOLOA, HAWAII – Oregon got its spring season off to a solid start, shooting 6 under in the opening round of the Amer Ari Invitational Thursday at the Waikoloa Kings' Course. Freshman Nate Stember paced the Ducks with a 4-under 68 and is tied for 10h.
How it Happened: Stember began his day on hole 14 and got off to a slow start, bogeying two of his first three holes. He bounced back through, with birdies at the next four to get to 2 under. The freshman made four birdies and a pair of bogeys over the final 10 holes, highlighted by a closing birdie at the par-4 13th.
Tom Gueant got off to a perfect start, making birdies at three of his first five holes, including back-to-back birdies at 17 and 18. After bogeys at holes one and two, he eagled the par-5 fourth to get back to 3 under. A bogey at eight and a birdie at 11 gave him a 3-under 69 in the opening round and put him in a tie for 17th.
Kevin Geniza also turned in a solid first round of the spring. He shot a 1-under 71, making four birdies and three bogeys to sit in a tie for 38th. Craig Ronne grinded out a 2-over 74 and is tied for 80th.
Texas holds the first-round team lead at 14 under while Texas Tech's Tyler Strafaci is atop the individual leaderboard following a 8-under 64.
