Ducks Pick Up Second Straight Top-Five Finish
03/10/20 | Men's Golf
BANDON, Ore. – Kevin Geniza turned in a career-best finish, coming in second at 4 under while Oregon earned a couple of quality wins in a third-place finish at the Bandon Dunes Championship Tuesday. The Ducks shot 6 over in difficult scoring conditions in the final round and finished 2 over for the week.
Oregon ended the tournament ahead of No. 21 UCLA and Kansas, which is ranked 34th in the Golfstat rankings, while also earning quality wins over Utah and San Jose State
How it Happened: Geniza got off to a rough start, going double bogey, birdie, bogey out of the gates. He settled in after that with eight straight pars from holes four through 11, before catching fire with three birdies in a four-hole stretch from 12 through 15. A bogey at the tough par-3 17th dropped him back to even on the round, but was still good enough to give him his second career top-five finish, both of which have come at the Bandon Dunes Championship.
Tom Gueant put together a final round of even-par 71 to record his second straight top-10 finish, coming in tied for seventh. The sophomore kicked it into gear down the stretch after starting his day with two bogeys and 12 pars through 14 holes, making birdies at the par-5 15th and 18th holes to get back to level par for the round and 1 under for the tournament.
Nate Stember shot a 2-over 73 and was 2 under through his first 14 holes, but went 4 over in the last four to finish tied for 44th. Craig Ronne and Yin Ho Yue each shot a 4-over 75, with Ronne coming in tied for 40th and Yue finishing tied for 55th.
Freshman Gian Luca Martinez shot a season-low 2-under 69, making four birdies and just two bogeys to finish tied for 47th at 7 over, playing as an individual.
