Season Recap: Ducks Win Third Pac-12 Title in Five Years
04/13/20 | Men's Basketball
The 2019-20 season saw No. 13 Oregon win the Pac-12 regular season title for the third time in the last five years, while 13-time All-American Payton Pritchard became the first Duck to earn the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award.
THE STARTING FIVE
• 1 – The 2020 Pac-12 regular season championship was the seventh league title in program history, joining 1919, 1939, 1945, 2002, 2016 and 2017. It was the first time the Ducks have clinched an outright league title at home since 1945.
• 2 – The University of Oregon became the first Pac-12 school, and only the second Power Five college overall, to win regular season conference titles in men's basketball, football and women's basketball in the same academic year. The Ducks join Ohio State (2005-06, 2006-07, 2009-10) as the only two Power Five schools to accomplish that triple crown.
• 3 – 2020 Pac-12 Player of the Year Payton Pritchard was honored as the nation's top point guard by winning the Bob Cousy Award presented by the Naismith Hall of Fame. With Sabrina Ionescu winning the Nancy Lieberman Award as the best women's point guard nationally, Oregon became the first school ever to sweep top point guard honors.
• 4 – Payton Pritchard joined Gary Payton (Oregon State, 1989-90), Damon Stoudamire (Arizona, 1994-95) and Jason Terry (Arizona, 1998-99) as the only players in Pac-12 history to lead the conference in both scoring and assists.
• 5 – Dana Altman finished the season as just one of five active head coaches with 23 consecutive winning seasons. The other four - Mike Krzyzewski, Tom Izzo, Bill Self and Jim Boeheim - are all in the Hall of Fame. Hall of Famer Roy Williams fell of that list in 2019-20.
OFF THE BENCH
• 1 – Oregon won 20 games for the 10th straight season. The Ducks are one of 11 schools nationally that have won at least 20 games for the last 10 consecutive seasons.
• 2 – Oregon played in a program record six overtime games in 2019-20 and was 5-1 in those contests. After losing in overtime to Gonzaga, the Ducks won five straight overtime games. Oregon went 6-2 versus the Top 25 in 2019-20.
• 3 – The Feb. 20 game at Arizona State marked the only time in 2019-20 that an opponent had more steals than Oregon (nine to six). The Ducks had more steals than the opposition 26 times and tied in steals four times. Oregon was second in the Pac-12 at 7.8 steals per game.
• 4 – Oregon had three of the top five three-point shooters in the Pac-12 in Will Richardson (.469/1st), Anthony Mathis (.454/2nd) and Payton Pritchard (.415/5th). The Ducks led the Pac-12 and ranked fifth nationally in three-point field goal percentage (.396).
• 5 – During the 2019-20 season, head coach Dana Altman passed Gary Williams (667) and John Wooden (664) for 25th on the NCAA Division I coaching wins list with 668.
• 6 – Payton Pritchard was named first team All-American by 13 different media outlets in 2019-20. He was Oregon's first consensus All-American in 80 years.
• 7 – Payton Pritchard finished his career with four school records - assists (659), wins (105) games (144) and starts (140).
• 8 – Payton Pritchard scored more points in "crunch time" - 91 - than any other player in the NCAA in 2019-20 (Synergy Basketball).
