Figueroa Slam Sparks Win Against Stanford
01/02/21 | Men's Basketball
EUGENE, Ore. – LJ Figueroa sparked an Oregon rally with a thunderous rebound dunk and Chris Duarte took over in the last five minutes for the second straight game as No. 21 Oregon outlasted Stanford 73-56 Saturday night at Matthew Knight Arena.
After Figueroa's dunk tied the game at 41-41 with 12:43 to go the Ducks (8-1, 3-0) outscored Stanford (5-3, 1-1) 32-15 the rest of the way.
"That energy from a big-time play like that, no matter what sport, somebody make a big play and gets everybody energized…you get on a roll with those types of plays," said head coach Dana Altman.
It was Oregon's 28th straight win on its home court.
How it Happened: Figueroa followed up his own deep three-pointer, running down the lane off his own miss, for a monstrous slam dunk that had the Oregon reserves jumping out of their seats. That was part of six straight points from Figueroa who finished with 13 points and a season-high 12 rebounds.
Then Duarte took over again, scoring 11 of his team-high 23 points in the final 5:43, including a pair of three-pointers and two dunks. He also had a season-high four steals. The senior from Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, scored 14 points in the final 5:18 of Thursday night's win over California.
In the first half, Stanford raced out to an 11-3 lead three minutes into the game before Ducks rallied with a 9-0 run to take a 12-11 lead with 16:34 to play. Eric Williams Jr. had four points in that run.
The Cardinal led by six, 27-21, with 4:52 to go in the half before the Ducks slowly chipped away. Williams Jr. hit a three just before the horn to cut Stanford's lead to two, 32-30, at halftime.
Duarte and Williams Jr. each had nine points to lead Oregon in the first period.
Who Stood Out: Figueroa had his second double-double of the season and the 10th of his career. Eugene Omoruyi had 15 points and a season-high five assists. He has scored in double figures in all nine games this season.
Notable: Altman tied former Cal and Stanford coach Mike Montgomery for 23rd on the NCAA career Division I wins list with 677. Saturday also marked Altman's 800th career win at all levels, including 123 victories in the junior college ranks.
Williams Jr., who had 12 points and six rebounds on Saturday, is one of just 11 players nationally and is the only player in the Pac-12 with eight or more games scoring at least 11 points with six rebounds this season.
Amauri Hardy had a season-best seven assists. It was his third straight game with five or more assists.
Freshman Jalen Terry was unavailable for Saturday's game.
Quotable:
Senior guard/forward LJ Figueroa on his rebound dunk:
"I've done it in pick-up games before. It surprises a lot of people…I kind of timed it up right."
Up Next: Oregon is at Colorado Thursday at 8 p.m. PT (FS1).
