Balanced Effort Sparks Oregon Past ASU
02/11/21 | Men's Basketball
TEMPE, Ariz. – Chris Duarte scored 18 points in the first half and Eugene Omoruyi had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds as Oregon defeated Arizona State 75-64 Thursday at Desert Financial Arena.
How it Happened: Tied at 19, the Ducks (11-4, 6-3) went on an 11-0 run fueled by three three-pointers by Duarte to take a 30-19 lead with 4:32 left in the first half and never trailed again. Oregon held the Sun Devils (6-9, 3-6) scoreless for 7:24 during the run and led 35-28 at intermission.
The Ducks opened the second half on a 14-4 run, getting five points from LJ Figueroa and four apiece from Omoruyi and Will Richardson, to build a 49-33 lead with 15:21 remaining.
After Figueroa gave the Ducks a 17-point lead, 65-48, on his fourth three-pointer of the night with 5:44 remaining, ASU went on a 10-0 to cut the Ducks' lead to seven, 65-58, with 4:27 to go.
Omoruyi ended the run with an inside layup followed by a three-pointer that put Oregon back in control, 70-58, with 2:25 left in the game.
In the first half, Duarte's 18 points came on seven-of-nine shooting from the field. It was his first game since sustaining an ankle injury early in the second half against Washington State on Feb. 4.
What Stood Out: Sharing the ball and interior defense. The Ducks had 22 assists on 28 field goals, while limiting ASU to just 32.5 percent (13-of-40) on shots inside the arc. Omoruyi has now scored in double figures in 14-of-15 games this season. Thursday was his second double-double of the season and the ninth of his career. Duarte, the Pac-12's leader in steals per game, had three more Thursday night.
Notable: Thursday was the first time this season that Oregon's top five scorers –Duarte, Omoruyi, Richardson, Figueroa and Eric Williams Jr. – all played in the same game. Thursday's game was also the first time this season Oregon played in front of fans, albeit a small crowd of less than 200. Williams Jr. grabbed nine rebounds in his first action since the Oregon State game on Jan. 23. Figueroa scored a season-high 16 points. With 15 points Thursday, Richardson has scored in double figures in all three games since his return from thumb surgery in December.
Quotable:
Head coach Dana Altman:
"It was good to get everyone back out there tonight, but I feel like we've still only scratched the surface. There's so much more there."
Up Next: Oregon travels to Tucson for an 11 a.m. Pacific Time game Saturday against Arizona (ESPN2).
