Coon, Hew Earn Weekly Honors

EUGENE, Ore. – The National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling Association (NCATA) announced its week two honors for the 2021 season on Thursday morning, with Oregon's Payton Coon earning Athlete of the Week honors to highlight the weekly awards. UO's Alyssa Hew was also recognized as the Specialist of the Week.
Coon earned her third career NCATA Athlete of the Week honor after leading Oregon to a season-opening win over Arizona Christian on Sunday. During the meet, she competed in 12 heats and the team event for UO, leading the Ducks to 11 scores of 9.50 or higher - including a 9.90 in compulsory toss and open toss, and a 9.85 in synchronized pyramid. She also scored a 9.80 in her individual tumbling pass, the six-element. Last season, Coon claimed NCATA Athlete of the Week honors twice, after Oregon wins over Hawaii Pacific and Asuza Pacific. In 2019, she earned her first career NCATA honor as the Specialist of the Week following a win over Arizona Christian.
Hew earned NCATA Specialist of the Week after starring for Oregon in the tumbling event on Sunday. She began the tumbling event by helping Oregon score a 9.50 out of 9.80 in the trio tumbling pass, a synchronized pass with two other athletes. She was later impressive in the open tumbling pass with a 9.825 out of a possible 10.0.
Kaylie Barrera earned Freshman of the Week honorable mention recognition. She competed in two different heats and team event during her NCATA debut. She helped the Ducks to an 8.45 out of 10.0 in compulsory tumbling, and was later impressive in the tumbling quad, helping Oregon score a 9.15 out of 9.40. She also competed in team event, which scored a 94.83 to wrap up the Ducks' victory.
