Ducks Suffer First Loss in Pac-12 Opener
02/26/21 | Men's Tennis
TEMPE, Ariz. – Joshua Charlton and Jesper Klöv-Nilssonn won their singles matches Friday afternoon but ultimately, the Oregon men's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season in a 5-2 setback at No. 21 Arizona State. Friday's match was the Pac-12 opener for both teams. Oregon is now 8-1 on the season.
Â
How it Happened: In doubles, Charlton and Quinn Vandecasteele were the first on the board with their 6-4 victory at the top spot but Arizona State (7-1) responded with wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles to secure the opening point of the match.
Â
The home team carried the momentum into singles play, taking the first four matches to clinch the win and run out to a 5-0 lead before Charlton and Klöv-Nilsson tallied points for the Ducks.
Â
Klöv-Nilsson secured Oregon's first point with a 6-2, 7-5 triumph at No. 5 singles. The UO sophomore improves to 8-0 this season and has yet to drop a set. With the score tied at 5-all in the second, Klöv-Nilsson broke his opponent, George Stoupe, and then went on to serve out the match.
Â
After clinching Thursday's win over New Mexico, Charlton tallied his second win in as many days with a 7-6, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles. He jumped out to an early break advantage but ASU's Tim Ruehl rallied before Charlton took the opener in a tiebreaker. With his two wins Friday, Charlton is up to 91 for his career—combined singles and doubles—at Oregon.
Â
Up Next: Oregon will make the trip over to Tucson for Sunday's Pac-12 match against No. 20 Arizona. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m. (PT). The Ducks' next home match is March 5 against Cal Poly.
