EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon linebacker Dru Mathis has been announced as a semifinalist for the 2021 William V. Campbell Trophy, college football's premier scholar-athlete award.
Nicknamed the "Academic Heisman," the Campbell trophy recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation for his combined academic success, football performance, and exemplary leadership.
In 2019, quarterback Justin Herbert became the first Duck ever to win the prestigious award.
Candidates for the award must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of playing eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.
Mathis is one of 176 total players to be named a semifinalist, and one of 79 nominees from the FBS. A member of Oregon's back-to-back Pac-12 Championship teams as well as the 2021 Rose Bowl team, Mathis is a sociology major who has maintained a 3.59 GPA as a Duck. He owns 22 career tackles in 14 games played.
A native of Ventura, Calif., Mathis is an aspiring police officer who participated in a four-week internship program with the UO Police Department. He continues to work with Young Athletes for Christ as a coach and mentor, and he has been involved with the organization since 2008.
