Ducks Finish Second In Stroke Play, To Face Auburn On Tuesday
10/24/22 | Women's Golf
ATLANTA - The No. 6 Oregon women's golf team will face off with No. 24 Auburn in the semifinals of the East Lake Cup on Tuesday after finishing second in stroke play with a 1-over 289 on Monday at East Lake Golf Club.
The Ducks and Tigers will tee off in match play at 9:45 A.M. PT on Tuesday, with the winner advancing to meet the winner of No. 3 Texas A&M and No. 18 UCLA in the championship match on Wednesday. The format mimics that of the NCAA Championships, where Oregon finished as the national runner-up last spring.
"It is an honor for our players to have earned this great opportunity to compete for a championship in a format that is similar to what we'll see at the end of the spring," head coach Derek Radley said. "I'm really proud of the way we stuck to our game plan today from start to finish. I'm excited to see us go toe-to-toe against a really good team tomorrow in match play."
Golf Channel will have live coverage on Tuesday and Wednesday from Noon to 3 P.M. PT.
How it Happened: The Ducks got off to a little bit of a slow start in stroke play with 11 bogeys and a double bogey against just four birdies on the front nine, but got it going on the back nine with nine birdies and just six bogeys.
Oregon was led by the trio of Briana Chacon, Hsin-Yu (Cynthia) Lu and Ashleigh Park, who all finished with an even-par 72 to tie for second overall. Texas A&M's Blanca Fernandez Garcia-Poggio was the individual medalist with a 2-under 70.
Chacon was the most consistent Duck on Monday, making two birdies and two bogeys while sitting at even par for the majority of the day. Park was 2 over at the turn before shooting 2 under on the back nine. Lu provided the highlight of the day, holing out from the greenside bunker at No.16 for one of three birdies in her final five holes to get to even after sitting at 3 over through 13.
