Ducks drop game two of series vs. USC
03/26/22 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. — Anthony Hall and Jack Scanlon homered, but USC scored their final two runs on bases-loaded hit-by-pitches to claim a 6-5 win over Oregon at PK Park on Saturday.
USC's win set up a rubber match on Sunday after Oregon won the series opener on Friday.
How It Happened: Hall gave Oregon (15-7, 6-2 Pac-12) the early lead, blasting his third home run of the season over the center-field wall in the second inning for a 1-0 lead.
USC (14-7, 4-4 Pac-12) took the lead with a three runs in the top of the fourth. Designated hitter Tyler Lozano capped the inning with a two-run homer, before the umpires ejected the Trojan's DH for his post-home run celebration.
Oregon answered in its half of the inning. After Hall reached on a throwing error and advanced on a Sam Novitske single, Jack Scanlon pulled his third homer of the season over the right-field wall for a 4-3 Oregon win.
USC regained the lead in the top of the sixth. Adrian Colon-Rosado homered to lead off the inning before Rylan Thomas was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for a 5-4 Trojan lead.
Oregon tied it in the bottom of the sixth. Colby Shade doubled into the right-center field gap scoring Novitske, who reached on a lead-off single.
The game stayed tied until the top of the eighth. USC loaded the bases on a walk, bunt single and another walk. After a force out at home gave Oregon two outs, Matt Dallas hit Smith to force Nick Lopez in from third for the eventual winning run.
Box Score Notes: Left fielder Tanner Smith had his hitting streak snapped at 12 … Shade extended his hitting streak to 12 games, matching Smith for the longest by a Ducks' hitter this season … Oregon had its five-game winning streak snapped … Oregon's 7-8-9 hitters (Novitske, Scanlon, Gavin Grant) combined for six hits (6-for-11), three RBI and three runs scored … Oregon ran its school record to 15 straight games with a home run, while also pushing its multi-home run streak to seven games … Freshman Jacob Walsh (2-for-5) had his team-best 14th multi-hit game, while Grant had his seventh, Novitske his fourth (36 career) and Scanlon his second.
On Deck: The Ducks and Trojans will play the rubber match of the series on Sunday with a 12:05 p.m. first pitch.
