Cardwell On Doak Walker Award Watch List

DALLAS — Oregon sophomore Byron Cardwell has been named to the 2022 preseason watch list for the Doak Walker Award, which is presented annually by the PwC SMU Athletic Forum to the nation's top college running back.

Cardwell is one of 10 Pac-12 running backs on the preseason watch list. Oregon has had one Doak Walker Award winner in its history – LaMichael James in 2010. The last Duck to be named a semifinalist or better for the award was Royce Freeman in 2017.

A San Diego native, Cardwell impressed as a true freshman in 2021 with 417 yards and three touchdowns on 61 carries. The dynamic back led the Pac-12 with an outstanding 6.84 yards per carry, and he tied for fourth in the league with eight rushes of 20 yards or more. Cardwell's 417 rushing yards ranked second among Pac-12 freshmen.

Cardwell put together his first career 100-yard rushing game on Oct. 30 against Colorado, going for 127 yards and a score on only seven carries. He was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week two weeks later after rushing nine times for 98 yards and two touchdowns in a win over Washington State.
