Ducks Look Flat In Loss To Devils
01/12/23 | Men's Basketball
Oregon fell behind early and never really got going in a 90-73 loss to ASU on Thursday.
EUGENE, Ore. — One week after a deflating loss followed by an impressive bounce-back effort, the Oregon men's basketball team will be looking for a similar outcome on its current homestand.
The Ducks (9-8, 3-3 Pac-12) came out flat Thursday and eventually trailed by as many as 29 in a 90-73 loss to Arizona State before 5,955 fans in Matthew Knight Arena. The UO men bounced back from a one-sided loss at Colorado last week with a big win at Utah, and this week they face the prospect of needing to beat No. 9 Arizona on Saturday in order to salvage another weekend split in conference play.
Oregon allowed ASU to shoot 52.4 percent overall and make 13 three-pointers, while the Ducks shot 42.4 percent themselves and were outrebounded 37-29.
"We got beat in every facet of the game," UO coach Dana Altman said. "So, really disappointed obviously. I know our fans are; they should be. That's not what you expect from our ball team, and our program. Very concerning."
Will Richardson scored 18 points to lead the Ducks, while N'Faly Dante added 14 points with eight rebounds. Jermaine Couisnard added nine points in his first home game of the season, while Keeshawn Barthelemy added seven points in his first game action since Nov. 20.

How It Happened: The Ducks trailed 17-12 when ASU went on an 18-2 run to blow the game open. The Sun Devils came into the game shooting 30.6 percent from three-point range and making 7.2 threes per game, but the 18-2 run was capped by their seventh made three of the night already, on 12 attempts.
The Ducks mustered a run on the back of their leader, Richardson. He made three-pointers on three of four possessions for a 9-0 run that got Oregon within 44-29, before ASU scored last in the first half to lead 46-29 at the break.
Needing to close the gap further early in the second, Oregon instead saw ASU open the half with a 10-2 run. The Sun Devils scored another eight straight later in the half for their biggest lead of the night, 73-44. The Ducks used an 11-0 run from there to close the gap again, and the final margin of 17 points was Oregon's smallest deficit since halftime.

Notable: Richardson had three assists to give him 426 in his career. He moved into sixth in UO history, passing Luke Jackson (424, 2000-04). … Richardson remains third in UO history for career steals, after making four Thursday to reach 171 in his career. … Richardson played in his 132nd game with Oregon on Thursday, and with one more appearance will tie Joevan Catron (133, 2006-11) for fifth in school history.
Quotable:
Head coach Dana Altman on the prospect of shaking up the lineup in the wake of the loss
"We've gotta try some different things. We can't keep doing the same thing. … We're going to have to change things up and really make guys more accountable for their minutes."
Head coach Dana Altman on the challenge of building chemistry as players return from injury
"We don't have a rotation; it's not where you want to be in mid-January, with guys just coming back."
