Shorthanded Ducks Fall To Syracuse
12/17/23 | Men's Basketball
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Oregon raced out to an early 10-point lead in the first half, but ran out of gas as Syracuse stormed back to defeat the Ducks, 83-63, in a neutral-site battle on Sunday morning.
UO found strong play from its pair of star freshmen as Kwame Evans Jr. dropped 17 points, eight rebounds and four steals while Jackson Shelstad dropped 16 as the duo led the Ducks in scoring. A pair of triples from Shelstad created an 8-0 scoring run that helped the Ducks jump on top 14-4 in the first half before the Orange took control from there.
Oregon struggled to shoot the ball as a unit, shooting just 36.1-percent from the floor to Syracuse's 56.6. The Orange used 19 Oregon turnovers to score 23 points on the other end to help its cause, while also outscoring the Ducks 50-28 inside the paint.
How It Happened: Oregon opened the game with a 4-0 run after Mahamadou Diawara and Shelstad created a pair of early buckets. Syracuse answered to make it a one-point game, before the Ducks started pushing the pace. Shelstad continued the charge by knocking down a pair of triples, creating an 8-0 scoring run to give Oregon a 14-4 lead. Despite being held to just nine-percent shooting across the first nine minutes of gametime, the Orange of Syracuse recovered from a slow start by scoring eight-unanswered points to cut the lead to two and get right back in the game.
Syracuse took its first lead of the game on a steal and dunk followed by a contested three, going on top 17-15 with under nine to play in the opening half. The teams traded buckets to keep it a one possession game until Syracuse outscored Oregon 12-5 across the final 6:18 of the half, holding the Ducks to just 30-percent shooting from the field and 17-percent from deep to take a 33-25 lead into halftime.
The first four minutes of the second half were all Syracuse, who led 42-30 at the first media timeout. The lead stayed at 12 through to the next media timeout as Oregon struggled to get stops and take care of the ball, turning it over 19 times on the day which Syracuse turned into 23 points. Thanks to 56.6-shooting percentage the Orange built the lead to 20 points at the eight-minute mark, a gap the Ducks were unable to cut into. With the game in hand for Syracuse, the teams emptied the benches to close out the contest.
Up Next: Oregon closes out the nonconference schedule as hosts to Kent State on Thursday, Dec. 21, at 6 p.m.
