02/04/23 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon snapped its two-match skid and improved to 3-2 on the spring season with a 6-1 win over Portland Saturday at the Student Tennis Center.
"Every match is important," said head coach Courtney Nagle. "I think we were just looking to bounce back from last weekend and I am really proud of how the team did that.
"We competed really hard (last week at the ITA Kickoff Weekend) and played two great teams and came up short, but was really proud of the way they worked this week and came back strong today to get the win."
After dropping matches against No. 14 Oklahoma State and Kansas, who is receiving votes in the latest ITA poll, at the ITA Kickoff weekend in Stillwater, Okla., Oregon got out to an early 1-0 lead after doubles action.
Ares Teixido Garcia and Jo-Yee Chan improved to 3-0 on the season together with a 6-2 win over Rimona Rouf and Aleks Dimitrijevic at No. 2. The top tandem of Sophie Luescher and Uxia Martinez Moral sealed the doubles point with a 6-3 triumph over Iva Zelic and Sally Pethybridge.
Luescher and Martinez Moral evened their spring doubles' record to 2-2.
In singles play, UO quickly picked up five straight-set victories to seal the match. First, Teixido Garcia pu Oregon on the board with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 before Martinez Moral won by the same score on court four.
The fourth and deciding point was collected by Luescher, winning 6-2, 6-3 at the top spot against Zelic. Chan, a freshman playing at No. 5, earned a 6-3, 6-1 win for her second collegiate singles victory. Karin Young finished a tough battle at third singles, 7-5, 6-2
Luescher moved her singles record to 2-0 while Martinez Moral is now 3-1 and Teixido Garcia improved to 3-1. Young's record moved to 2-1.
UO is 36-1 against Portland and earned a second straight 6-1 win against the Pilots.
The Ducks continue their homestand with two matches next weekend, taking on Iowa on Friday at 1 p.m. and Saint Mary's on Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Student Tennis Center.
