Ducks Fall to Trojans on Senior Day
04/16/23 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – In its final home match of the regular season, 49th-ranked Oregon dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 26 USC on Senior Day Sunday at the Student Tennis Center.
Oregon (11-9, 4-6) honored four seniors prior to its matchup with the Trojans in Misaki Kobayashi, Lillian Mould, Madisen Olsen and Myah Petchey. USC marked UO's fifth straight top-30 opponent to close the regular season.
"It's a special group of girls," head coach Courtney Nagle said of her senior class. "A lot of them were some of my first recruits coming in (at Oregon). After my first year coming in, it was a really tough season. When I think of these seniors, they are a real bright spot for us and really energized us. They've been a part of so many firsts and seconds for our program. Almost all of them were a part of our victory over Stanford for the first time ever, and that was on a Senior Day, so that was pretty special.
"I think how connected they are, as well. I think they're going to be friends for life because of their time here. That's always really rewarding to see."
After splitting at Nos. 2 and 3, the doubles point came down to court one. Sophie Luescher and Uxia Martinez Moral were even at 5-5 against USC's 17th-ranked doubles team of Eryn Cayetano and Maddy Sieg. The Trojans withstood the pressure from Luescher and Martinez to earn a 7-5 win and hand USC a 1-0 lead headed to singles.
Petchey and Karin Young picked up a 6-3 win at the second spot over Grace Piper and Naimo Cheong. USC's Emma Charney and Nathalie Rodilosso got by Jo-Yee Chan and Olsen at No. 3, 6-4.
In singles action, USC earned straight-set wins on courts one, two and six to earn the 4-0 victory.
Luescher took on the nation's seventh-ranked player in Sieg, falling 6-2, 6-1. Petchey was bested by Emma Charney at No. 2, 6-2, 6-0 and Olsen, playing at the sixth position, fell 6-0, 6-0 to Nathalie Rodilosso.
Young claimed the first set in her matchup with McKenna Koenig, 7-5, as the two were level at 2-2 in the second set when the match was decided.
The Ducks will head to Ojai, Calif., for the 2023 Pac-12 Tournament, which gets underway on Wednesday, April 26.
