Ducks clinch series at Cal
04/23/23 | Baseball
BERKELEY, Calif. — A quality combined pitching performance and a late flurry sealed a 9-3 win against California Sunday for No. 20 Oregon at Stu Gordon Field.
The afternoon victory gave the Ducks (26-12, 11-7 Pac-12) their seventh series win and fourth in Pac-12 play.
How it Happened: Oregon found its way onto the scoreboard early in the first inning. After Drew Cowley reached on a single to right field, Cal (18-18, 6-15 Pac-12) committed a fielding error that allowed the Oregon shortstop to round the bases for the day's first run.
Matthew Grabmann got the starting nod for the first time since March 26, on Sunday, working seamlessly through the first three innings. The freshman worked out of an early jam in the first with two runners on to keep the Ducks' advantage.
Oregon found some offensive production in the fourth inning. After back-to-back singles from Sabin Ceballos and Tanner Smith, Bennett Thompson stepped up to the plate, delivering with the fourth double in the catcher's last three starts to make it a 3-0 lead. Thompson would come around to make it 4-0 after another error from the Golden Bears.
Grabmann was in some early trouble in the fourth inning. After allowing a leadoff triple to Cal's Kretzchm, the leadoff baserunner scored on a wild pitch for the Golden Bear's first run of the day. After the setback, the Nova Scotia native powered through the rest of the inning to keep the game at 4-1.
The teams traded runs in the fifth and sixth innings to make it 5-2. Colby Shade led off the top of the fifth with a triple and worked home on a fielder's choice off the bat of Ceballos. In the bottom of the sixth, the Golden Bears plated another run with a two-out RBI single to right center.
In the bottom of the eighth, Cal loaded the bases behind two singles and a walk. Matt Dallas came in and inherited the situation, ultimately shutting down the threat from the Golden Bears after forcing consecutive fielder's choices to close out the inning.
The Oregon bats were quiet until a resurgence in the top of the ninth. Rikuu Nishida third home run of the season led off the final frame. Shade reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the Cal third baseman. Cowley drove in the Duck center fielder with a single and scored off a single from Smith. Jacob Walsh drove in the final run of the inning for the Ducks with a double.
Box Score Notes: Ceballos drove in a team-leading 43rd RBI of the season, now needing three more to crack into the single-season top 10 list … Nishida's ninth-inning home run extended Oregon's streak of consecutive games with a home run to eight, the third longest streak in school history … Crowley's two hits gives the senior 13 multiple-hit games in the last 23.
On Deck: Oregon returns to PK Park for a two-game series against Gonzaga, beginning on Tuesday, April 25 at 5:05 p.m. PT.
